24 Days of Rum (#18) – Ron Aldea Maestro (Spain)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 18, 2019

Day 18 of my Rum Advent takes me to the Canary Islands which I discovered are a Spanish archipelago located in Atlantic Ocean about 100 kilometers off the coast of Morocco.

The spirits company traces its history back to the Distillery of Ron Aldea which Don Manuel Quevedo Alemán founded in the municipality of Aldea de San Nicolás de Tolentino, on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria. Today, Ron Aldea Rum is produced on the fifth largest of the Canary Islands, La Palma.

Ron Aldea Maestro was distilled in 2006 from locally produced sugarcane juice using the original still that Don Manuel Quevedo Aleman built in 1893.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the No. 18 spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ron Aldea Maestro (10 Years Old)

“… Melding of oak, caramel and baking spices with a light leathery bitterness and a touch of orange peel spiciness …”

Chimo!

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. It features an extraordinary opportunity to sample a wide variety of premium rums allowing you to hone in on the particular style which suits your palate. 2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #6 – J.P. Wiser’s 18 Year Old

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 17, 2019

The 18 Year Old Canadian Whisky from J.P. Wiser’s has been on my list of favourites for years. In fact, not too many years ago, if someone would ask me what I thought the best whisky in Canada was, without hesitation I would say Wiser’s 18 Year Old. And you know what, that still might be true, because this is one really great whisky, full of fine oak spice. In fact, it is this fine oak spice that defines the whisky. You see, when a whisky ages or matures in oak, the first couple of years the whisky picks up vanillans and caramels from the barrel pretty easily, but once we get beyond those first few years, the major flavour attribute the barrel gives to the whisky is a fine spiciness that continues to grow the longer the whisky rests within.

It is this fine spicy quality which I love so much. And although Canadian Whisky as a whole is evolving, and the flavour profiles at the most premium are becoming rounder and more flavourful. There will always be a spot on my whisky shelf for  the spice bomb that is J.P. Wiser’s 18 Year Old.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: J.P. Wiser’s 18 Year Old Canadian Whisky

“… The initial breezes are full of fine oak spices with hints of butterscotch and clean grain. As the glass breathes the spiciness within the breezes above the glass continues unabated. Meandering within the spice are rich smells of butterscotch and maple with a few hints of sharp orange peel and dusty grain. Some baking spices begin to form after about five minutes with vanilla and  brown sugar spice, bits of cinnamon white pepper and cloves …”

Chimo!

24 Days of Rum (#17) – Borgoe 12 Reserve Collection (Suriname)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 17, 2019

With only 8 days left in the 24 Days Of Rum Advent Calendar from 1423 World Class Spirits  our destination is Suriname where Suriname Alcoholic Beverages N.V.  (SAB) was established in 1966.

Suriname’s most celebrated dark rum Borgoe was introduced in 1982 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sugar plantation Mariënburg. Borgoe 12 is well up the ladder in the Borgoe family of rums and according to the company website it is a blend of carefully selected rums, blended to perfection and aged in authentic oak barrels.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the No. 17 spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #7 – Alberta Springs Canadian Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 16, 2019

Alberta Springs Canadian Whisky is the last of the so-called ‘economy’ whiskies on my 2019 list of favourites. It’s not really an ‘economy’ whisky, it’s really a 10 year old sipping whisky sold at an incredibly attractive price.  The price is in fact so attractive, that this sipping whisky is a great choice for those who prefer high end mixers.

Myself, I am as likely to mix a nice Old Fashioned Cocktail, as I am to mix a rye and ginger-ale splash, as I am to sipping the spirit neat or over ice. Like the Alberta Premium previously published as part of this list, Alberta Springs is an incredibly versatile dram.

Here is a link to my most recent review:

Review: Alberta Springs Canadian Whisky

“… The initial breezes from the glass represent a dusty spice filled Canadian whisky with firm almond scents tagging along with the spicy grain. Fine oak spices drift upwards, and the spiciness in the air reminds me of ginger and cardamon with perhaps a few hints of cinnamon drifting in between …”

24 Days of Rum (#16) – Clemente Select Barrel (Martinique)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 16, 2019

On day 16 of my Rum Advent I am travelling to Martinique to sample an Agricole Rhum from one of the most prominent Agricole producers in the Caribbean. Clément Agricole Rhum has been produced on the Isle of Martinique since 1887. Although the agricole  Rhum is distilled at the Simon Distillery, the rhum is finished at Habitation Clément (built on the site of a former sugar refinery) which was purchased by Homére Clément in 1887.

Review: Clemente Select Barrel

“… A touch of herbal grass with layers of butterscotch and honey. Oak and light baking spices followed by vanilla and almond with a light raisin-like quality underneath …”
