24 Days of Rum (#13) – Chairman’s Reserve Forgotten Casks (St. Lucia)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 13, 2019

St.Lucia is the home to Chairman’s Reserve, a very popular rum brand which up to this time has eluded me. It’s kind of nice to start my exploration of the brand at the top of its ladder with Chairman’s Reserve Forgotten Casks a well aged rum (6 to 11 years) which became St. Lucia Distillers top brand quite by accident. You will have to read the review to get the whole story.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the No. 13 spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Chairman’s Reserve Forgotten Casks

“… Maple sweetness with a nice light oaky backdrop, light nuttiness underneath reminds me of almonds and pecans, and then there is a lovely little bit of baking spice (vanilla  and cinnamon), Finally hints of raisins mixed with that light herbal grasses …”

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. It features an extraordinary opportunity to sample a wide variety of premium rums allowing you to hone in on the particular style which suits your palate. 2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #11 – Alberta Premium

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 12, 2019

Alberta Premium is a brand that doesn’t get a whole lot exposure outside of my home Province. It’s not that the brand is unknown, Jim Murray did name it the Best Whisky in Canada for about five years in a row in the mid to late 2000’s; but after that initial hype died down the brand has sort of settled back into the rear view of the consumer’s consciousness.

And that is a pity, as Alberta Premium was, for the longest stretch of time, one of (if not the only) 100% pure rye grain production whiskies in the entire world. The recent rediscovery and popularity of the rye grain is largely because of the Alberta Premium brand.

I think the reason why the brand gets so little love, is the terrible bottle (and label) which houses the whisky. The entire presentation screams bottom shelf and retro 70s.

Frankly, whenever I grab a bottle to pour for friends who have never tried the spirit, I am greeted with dismay as they believe I have chosen a sub par economy brand to share instead of some of my good stuff. My explanations of the quality within usually falls on deaf ears, and this reinforces the fact that if ever there was a spirit in need of an image change, it is Alberta Premium.

Despite all of this, I almost always have a bottle on hand. Although there are now quite a few other 100 % rye grain whiskies being sold right now. For myself this is the original, and because of its enormous versatility, it is my favourite 100 % rye whisky.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Alberta Premium 100 % Rye Whisky

” … The breezes above the glass bring me the scents and smells of a fruit-filled rye with additional notes of vanilla. Fine oak spices and a touch of citrus zest mingle within the fruity rye smells …”

Chimo!

Note: We are just past half way through my list of favourites. Understand, these are ‘favourites’ which does not necessarily the ‘best’ Canadian Whiskies. Economy and versatility have played an enormous role in my choices this year. The wonderful cocktail I suggested at the conclusion of my review of Alberta Premium illustrates just how versatile this economy whisky is.  And it has all that versatility without sacrificing flavour.

24 Days of Rum (#12) – Coloma 8 Anos Rum (Colombia)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 12, 2019

We have returned to the South American Continent for the twelfth day of my Christmas Rum AdventColoma 8 Anos Rum is produced in Colombia at the Hacienda Coloma which is a coffee estate located south of Bogota, 1700 meters above see level. The Hacienda Coloma does not appear to have a rum distillery attached to its facility so it is likely that the rum bottled at the coffee estate was produced elsewhere (there are a couple of likely candidates within Colombia). According to the Ron Coloma website this is a molasses based, age stated rum, which was matured continuously in American oak barrels. (Non Solera Aging).

What makes the rum unique, is that after the initial aging, the spirit is then finished in barrels previously used for aging Coloma coffee liqueur. Thus a light ribbon of coffee flavour can be expected to be found within the rum’s flavour profile.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the No. 12 spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Coloma 8 Anos Rum

“… Oak spice, vanilla and butterscotch melded with almond and orange peel. Obvious notes of chocolate and a light imprint of tobacco. Coffee notes are subtle and do not disturb the well structured rum. …”

2019 Rum Howler Favourite 20 Canadian Whiskies: #12 – Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 11, 2019

Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve was launched in the fall of 2008. The whisky was a more premium version of the companies flagship Forty Creek Whisky except that for the Double Barrel Reserve one more step was taken in the maturation process with the final blend set down in first run bourbon barrels for a final period of aging. The release was very successful, and Forty Creek soon made this whisky part of their permanent family.

When the Double Barrel Reserve was first launched I bought a half case and I still have three of those original bottles from the first batch intact as well as one which is opened. I have had occasion to sample bottles from later batches, and to be honest, usually they are a little better than the whisky from the original batch. However, there is something about that first batch which always feels special. It is a treat I enjoy when I indulge myself in a small glass of my diminishing supply.

Here is a link to my most recent review of the Double Barrel:

Review: Forty Creek Double Barrel Reserve Canadian Whisky (Lot 263)

“… The flavour includes maple and corn carried by rye spice, firm oak tannins, tobacco and wood spices which dry the mouth. Honeycomb, orange peel spice, and marzipan also seem to bobble within the oakiness adding complexity to each spirit …”

24 Days of Rum (#11) – Toucan #4 Rhum (Madeira)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 11, 2019

Today I am traveling (at least in Spirit) to the equatorial zone of South America, at the edge of the rain forest where the Agricole Rhum, Toucan #4 is produced in French Guiana. (French Guiana is an overseas department of France on the northeast coast of South America, composed mainly of tropical rainforest.)

Toucan Rhum is produced at Rhumerie Saint-Maurice, located in the municipality of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni (French Giana). This South American distillery is located about 350 km from the equator on the east coast. The sugar cane used for the production of Toucan Rhum is harvested from a field which sits at the edge of a virgin rain forest where the Toucan bird (from which the Rhum receives its name) still flourishes in great numbers.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the eleventh spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Toucan No. 4 Rhum

“… Fine oak spice appears with a strengthened herbal impression which now reminds me of light tobacco with a dash of menthol. Bits of resin and camphor, butterscotch, orange peel and balsam wood. Shortbread cookies …”
