24 Days of Rum (#3) – Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2019

After a stellar start, my 24 Days of Rum Advent took a step back today with the #3 selection in he 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box. I suspect many others will appreciate Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (from Guyana) much more than I did, but I promised honest reviews so I have to call this one the way I see it.

Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum is relatively new to the Pusser’s range. According to the producer’s website it is a traditional Royal Navy style rum produced at original Admiralty strength. Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the ship’s purser shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tot by mixing a few grains of gunpowder to the rum to see if it would burn. If the mixture ignited, the rum was ‘at proof.’ If it didn’t, the purser might find himself tossed to sea.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the third spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box advent:

Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

“… Hard to get past the heat, but the rum tastes thin as if there is not much age here. Some pungent baking spice (nutmeg and clove) and lightly bitter vanillans …”

Please enjoy my review of the Gunpowder Rum, a spirit which would be much more at home in a Zombie Cocktail than a sipping glass.

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. It features an extraordinary opportunity to sample a wide variety of premium rums allowing you to hone in on the particular style which suits your palate. As indicated in my previously published review (here) This Rum Advent Calendar is a highly recommended gift for the rum enthusiast.

24 Days of Rum (#2) – Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva (Peru)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 2, 2019

Things remain on a high note as the #2 Rum inside the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box is a winner from Peru, Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva.

Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva is produced at he Hacienda Agicola in Chiclayo, an small enclave near the sea in Northern Peru. This new rum has been produced from an original recipe, and is designed to be a lighter fresher version of Ron Millonario yet with the same rich raisin-like flavour profile the brand is known for.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the second spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva

“… I would be tempted describe this as a dessert rum as it is sweeter than most rums; however it is also rich and delicious. Candied oranges, rich vanilla and toffee spice. Underlying nuttiness of walnut, rich baking spices, figs, dates and raisins …”

24 Days of Rum (#1) – Mount Gay 1703 Reserve Cask XO (Barbados)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 1, 2019

My 24 Days of Rum begins with quite a bang with the highly regarded Mount Gay 1703 XO Reserve Cask Rum from Barbados.

Mount Gay 1703 XO is produced in a using a combination of both column and traditional copper pot stills. The rum is matured in American oak barrels which were previously used to age whiskey or Kentucky bourbon. This is a blended spirit consisting of a wide range of rums of various ages some reputed to be as old as 15 years.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the First spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Mount Gay 1703 XO Reserve Cask Rum

” … Oak spice, treacle and molasses as well as firm baking spices (vanilla, cinnamon and clove). Roasted marshmallow, coffee and cocoa. Fruity with canned apricots and orange marmalade. Herbal notes from the pot still  are obvious as well …”

It is safe to say that we are off to a great start with the 24 Days of Rum Advent Calendar. Let’s hope tomorrow treats us as well.

Review: Forty Creek Victory (2019 Limited Release)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 30, 2019

Forty Creek Whisky has an annual tradition of producing a special limited release whisky which is built upon the foundation of the company’s flagship whisky, Forty Creek Barrel Select. These annual special releases each seek to bring new character to the Forty Creek family.

The 2019 Limited Release, Forty Creek Victory, commemorates the 205th Anniversary of the Engagement at the Forty which was a battle during the War of 1812 which occurred almost on the very ground upon which the Forty Creek Distillery is situated. In creating this years limited edition release, Forty Creek’s Master Distillery decided to do a little experimentation with a four year old Forty Creek Whisky, high wood vanilla staves, a ten year old Corn whisky and Starboard Wine.

Here is a link to my final Canadian Whisky Review of 2019:

Review: Forty Creek Victory (2019 Limited Release)

“… The breezes in the air bring fine oak spices forward along with just a hint of alcohol astringency. The spirit seems youthful and perhaps just a little brash. Hints of red licorice augment the spice, with notes of vanilla, and grain (rye predominantly) beginning to peak though …”

Please enjoy my review, and stay tuned as Tomorrow I begin my 24 Days of Rum Advent series of reviews>

Review: J.P. Wiser’s Dave Keon Alumni Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on November 28, 2019

Today I am completing my series of reviews for the 2018 and 2019 J.P. Wiser’s NHLAA  Whiskies. A few years ago J.P. Wiser’s and the NHL Alumni Association (NHLAA) got together to bring whisky fans something uniquely Canadian. One time edition Canadian whiskies which are each blended with the aim of containing characteristic links to specific NHLAA members for whom the blend is named.

This is the review for the J. P. Wiser’s Dave Keon Alumni Whisky. According to the press information sent to me:

With a 45% ABV to celebrate the 45-points Dave scored in his 1st season, this well-balanced whisky compliments his offensive and defensive abilities on the ice. To truly pay homage to this hockey legend, this whisky is aged 14 years for Dave’s playing number and uses 4 different barrels to commemorate his 4 Cup wins.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: J.P. Wiser’s Dave Keon Alumni Whisky

“… The aroma rising from the glass is complex with scents of orange peel mingling with vanilla, oak spice, almond, and ginger. As the glass breathes I begin to notice corn syrup and oak sap mingling with the orange peel giving me an impression of marmalade and canned fruit …”

Note: As part of the partnership with the NHL Alumni, a potion of the sales are be donated to NHLAA to support their philanthropic causes. This whisky was exclusive to Canada and marketed primarily in Quebec and Ontario.
