Review: Black Fly Tequila Shaker Shots

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 22, 2019

Black Fly Beverage Company promotes itself as Ontario’s first micro-distillery and was was founded in 2005 by husband & wife Rob Kelly and Cathy Siskind-Kelly. Named after the iconic insect immortalized by Canadian Folk Singer, Wade Hemsworth, their company was given the first Distillery License granted in Ontario in over 100 years. The vision of Rob and Kathy is to create premium spirits with more natural flavours and less sweetness with quality ingredients and unique innovative packaging.

I was sent a variety of samples from Black Fly Beverages and I have decided to begin this review series with their Black Fly Tequila Shaker Shots which I am told are produced in-house with real Mexican Tequila, real lemon and Lime Juice, refreshing soda and a hint of salt. They are sold in small shaker tubes mixed at 17 % alcohol by volume. The ingredients list suggests a premixed Margarita ready for your enjoyment.

Here is a link to my full review of this unique new tequila experience:

Review: Black Fly Tequila Shaker Shots

“… I must say I found the experience quite enjoyable. This is because the Margarita flavour was very natual indicating the presence of a pleasant highland tequila used to manufacture the shot accompanied by real lemon and lime juice. The tequila flavour was neither too bold, not too soft, and I think the shots will appeal to a wide variety of persons …”

I hope everyone enjoys my review which includes a few of my own serving suggestions. (BTW: I intend to enjoy one or two more of those Black Fly Tequila Shaker Shot Cocktails as I watch the Sunday afternoon football game today. )

Review: Wayne Gretzky No. 99 Ice Cask Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 19, 2019

Wayne Gretzky No 99 Ice Cask Whisky is a Canadian Whisky produced by Wayne Gretzky Estates, who advertise themselves as Niagra’s only Winery, Distillery and Brewery. The new 23,000 square foot facility (a cooperative effort between Andrew Peller (Wines) LTD. and the Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky) was constructed over two years and includes both a winery and a distillery as well as tasting areas and barrel aging cellar.

The Ice Cask Whisky does not contain an age statement, however, as a Canadian Whisky we know that it must have been aged in oak casks for at least three years. Apparently, a small portion the spirit’s maturation was in accomplished in Ice Wine Casks which has added a hint of sweet fruit (grape) to the signature Canadian Whisky flavour profile. Although, the Ice Cask enhancement is at the front and center of the whisky, it is also apparent from tasting that rye grain was a strong focus as well. Wayne Gretzky Estates Master Distiller Joshua Beach was in charge of the project which is said to have required more than 99 trials to get just perfect.

Here is a link to my latest Canadian Whisky Review:

Review: Wayne Gretzky No. 99 Ice Cask Whisky

“…. The breezes bring forward an impression of bold rye and cereal grain which are accented by butterscotch, vanilla and clove with a light nutty scent of almond tagging along. I gave the whisky several minutes in the glass to develop. A light fruity quality was evident with notes of orange citrus and fainter tones of green grape …”

Please enjoy the review and my recommended cocktail which follows.

Bitter(s) Review: Angostura Orange Bitters

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 17, 2019

Angostura Aromatic Bitters were first produced in 1824, in the town of Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela) by Dr. Johann Siegert who created his aromatic bitters as a medicinal treatment to alleviate digestive and stomach ailments. In the 1870’s the brand was moved to Trinidad, where Johann Siegert’s son, Don Carlos established the aromatic bitters as a complementary ingredient for cocktails and in food.

Angostura Orange Bitters were launched in 2007 providing an innovative new flavour of bitters for cocktail enthusiasts.

According to the company website:

Made from its own special recipe, ANGOSTURA® orange bitters is a complex blend of tropical oranges and spices. “The soul of an exceptional dry martini”; it is wonderfully versatile and pairs perfectly with vodka, gin and whisky. It also adds a depth of flavour to rum cocktails …

You may read my full review which includes a wonderful Tequila cocktail suggestion (El Hereje) by using the following link to my review page:

Review: Angostura Orange Bitters

” … When I put a small amount of the Orange Bitters on my tongue I immediately note a sharp taste of orange zest. (In fact, Angostura makes the claim that their bitters can be used as a substitute for orange zest for cooking and baking.) There is a very dry characteristic to the zesty flavour almost as if the bitters contain some sort of dry alkali spice as well as a light menthol characteristic. These are secondary impressions to be sure as orange zest dominates the bitters …”

Review: Canadian Club Barley Batch Limited Edition Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 13, 2019

Barley Batch Highball

In the fall of 2018 Canadian Club released a special Limited Edition Whisky which celebrated Canadian Club’s 160th anniversary in the fall of 2018, the Canadian Club Barely Edition. Just as the name implies this is a whisky which relies heavily upon the influence of barley grain as the whisky is a blending of six-year-old barley malt whisky (produced in Calgary by Alberta Distillers) with Canadian Club’s flagship Canadian Club Whisky (produced in Windsor Ontario  at the Hiram Walker Distillery.

This Canadian Only release recently became available in my home Province of Alberta, and I manged to secure a bottle for tasting. I found it interesting that Canadian Club has chosen to bottle this expression at 42 % alcohol by volume rather than the traditional 40 % abv. which is more typical of the Canadian Club Family.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Canadian Club Barley Batch Limited Edition Whisky

“… The initial aroma is filled with herbal grass and menthol accented by butterscotch, almond and vanilla. I begin to notice scents of burlap and barley pushing their way through with some wood spices in the background. The herbal nature of the spirit is intriguing; this is quite a departure for the Canadian Club brand …”

Please enjoy my latest Canadian Whisky Review which concludes with a nice highball recipe for you to enjoy, the Barley Batch Highball.

Review: Tanduay Superior Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 11, 2019

In 2013, Tanduay Holdings began its entry into North America by placing two new rums into the US market. At the time, Tanduay was one of the very largest Rum producers in the world. (The reason they were relatively unknown in North America is because their Asian rum is produced in the Philippines and was sold almost exclusively into Asia.) The launch featured their premium Silver, and Gold rums which I reviewed in 2013 and reassessed again earlier this year (here and here).

Tanduay Superior Rum is a more premium spirit which has been sold in my home Province of Alberta for some time now. It is produced from a blend of rums apparently aged for 12 years or more. According to the promotional materials I have been sent, the Superior Rum is meant to be meant enjoyed neat or over ice.

Here is a link to my recent re-evaluation of this premium spirit:

Review: Tanduay Superior Rum

” … The Tanduay Superior is a little dryer in the mouth than I was expecting with the light caramel sweetness I noticed on the nose taking a back seat to pungent oak spices and the lightly bitter flavours of toasted walnut and coconut. There is a gentle sweep of vanilla which runs through the rum as well …”

Please enjoy my re-evaluation of Tanduay Superior Rum. I have a ful schedule of reviews coming over the next few weeks as I catch up from my summer hiatus.
