Intoducing Dictador Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 1, 2010

I was first introduced to the Dictador Rums about six months ago when I convinced Paul Charabin of  PB Beverages to drop in on one of the monthly gatherings of The Edmonton Rum Chums . He brought a couple of bottles of the new Dictador Rum (The 12-year-old and the 20-year-old).

Dictador is a product which melds European style with Colombian rum, and crowns the presentation in elegant Japanese bottles.   The product exudes class and luxury and practically has your mouth-watering before you even open the bottle.

Of course this begs the question, did the crafters of the rum pay as much attention to the contents, as they did to the container?  In a nutshell, the answer is undeniably…Yes!  Oh My Yes!

I have sampled this rum twice,  the first time in February at that meeting of the Edmonton Rum Chums, and the second time in Miami, at Rum Renaissance. Each time I was completely taken in by the Dictador style and the rich vibrant rum inside the bottles.  The rum is a medium bodied complex blend of premium aged rums with a full rich flavour profile.   The 12-year-old is luxuriously smooth in spite of the rich flavours, and the 20-year-old brings the extra complexity of  a long aged rum to the fore without the bitterness and harshness which can come with age.  I am hard pressed to choose between them.  Fortunately for me, I was promised sample bottles of each to put through the paces of my review system, and you can be sure that I will provide all of you with more details as soon as they are available.  Until then…Cheers!

Edmonton “Talk Like a Pirate” Rumfest!

Posted by Arctic Wolf on August 18, 2010

==================================

Notice:

If I didn’t have bad luck, what kind of luck would I have.  I talked to the organizers last week and everything was full steam ahead and the apparently today, a day after my posting, the Venue owners (West Edmonton Mall) have bumped the event out of its time slot in favour of another event.

Oh well, I am assured the event will be rescheduled, but my timing could not have been worse!

Introducing Kōloa Kaua`i Hawaiian Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on August 3, 2010

It was at the Rum Renaissance in Miami Florida this past May that I was first introduced to Kōloa Kaua`i Hawaiian Rum. The Kōloa Rum Company had been ‘up and rumming’ for approximately one year, and in spite of the competition from much more experienced rum companies, the Kōloa Kaua`i Dark Hawaiian Rum garnered one of prestigious gold medals at the Rumxp Tasting Competition which was in held conjunction with the event. This was a remarkable feat considering that the license to distill alcohol had been issued only one year previous, on April 1, 2009.

So I decided I had better get to know this company a little better, and after I emailed my information request, I was contacted by Jeanne Toulon, Director of Public Relations, for the Kōloa Rum Company.  Jeanne was only too happy to help me out and soon deluged me with news clippings, a cool video and as much information as she could stuff into the large brown envelope that she sent my way.  I was even given a small sample of the crystallized brown sugar from the Gay and Robinson Plantation which is the basic raw material from which all of the Kōloa Rum is distilled.  (I should add that her generosity also extended to the delivery of three bottles of the Company’s, Kōloa Kaua`i Hawaiian Rum, so that I could sample and review them at my leisure here on my blog.)

In case you are wondering, the Kōloa Rums are made using a vintage 1210 gallon vintage copper pot still imported from Kentucky.  This copper still was first shipped by train to the west coast and then by boat to the Islands of Hawaii.  Constructed just after World War II, the still was previously used to distill Kentucky whiskey.

The actual base material for the distillation is not molasses, but rather the Gay and Robinson Plantation crystallized sugar.  I am told that the sugar has a higher than normal molasses content and indeed it carries a wonderful molasses aroma.  From this distillate, and using the vintage copper pot still, all of the Kōloa Rum is made in a batch style.  The resulting white rum is about as pure as rum can be,  bottled fresh with no barrel aging.  The gold rum is just as fresh as the white, with the gold colour stemming from the addition of caramelized Gay and Robinson Plantation crystal sugar.  And finally, the dark rum, which also uses fresh rum, is enhanced with the same caramelized sugar as well as a secret recipe of spices to give it the dark rich colour and flavour which resulted in the Gold Medal at Rum Renaissance.  In a way these are throwback rums made in the manner and style of the past when it was entirely the blender’s mastery that was needed to sooth the spirit rather than the use of oak barrel aging.

The The Kōloa Rum Company has already broken new ground being the first company to legally produce rum on the Island of Kaua`i.  They have also recently established a Plantation style tasting room for visitors to the distillery to enjoy their rums, and they have won a Gold medal at Rum Renaissance.  All of this after merely one year of operation! I think it is obvious to see why I was excited to learn more.

So over the next several weeks I will be embarking on a Hawaiian odyssey of sorts. I will review each bottle of Kōloa rum, putting them through the rigors of my tasting methodology.  What the results of my reviews will be, I cannot say at this point, but what I can say is that based upon the accolades they have already earned, and based how hard they have worked in their first year of operation, I am entering upon my Hawaiian odyssey with a very positive outlook.  You can look forward to the reviews over the next several weeks.

Howling Hightlight: PaQui Tequila

Be Happy!
PaQuí Tequila

PaQui TEQUILA LAUNCHES

PaQuí, whose name means “to be happy” in the native Aztec language, is a brand new luxury tequila which seeks to capture the sense of adventure and the taste of quality that the luxury tequila drinker demands. PaQui Tequila is currently available in California and Texas being brought to market by Tequila Holdings, Inc., distillers and importers of PaQuí (Pa’key).

“Conceived nearly three years ago, PaQuí Tequila is the result of extensive research where we learned that the high-end tequila experience is about celebrating and having fun with an authentically Mexican tequila,” says John Chappell, Vice President, Brand Development. ” PaQuí,  is deeply Mexican and captures the sense of adventure the drinker is seeking. The luxury tequila drinker also cares intensely about quality so we went out and hired the best Master Distiller to create an outstanding tequila. The result is PaQuí Silvera, a distinctive tequila that expresses the essence of blue agave with an inviting, flowery aroma and exquisite taste.”

PaQuí is handcrafted in small batches in the town of Tequila, Mexico, where the master distiller uses an elaborate process called Selective Distillation.  This costly process separates the heart of the distillation and selects only the superior flavors and aromas, leaving a very pure tequila of exceptional character.

The following are the distiller’s tasting notes for the PaQui Silver:

Aroma

Big fruity aroma of sweet agave.
Notes of citrus, jasmine and fresh green grass.
Complex and inviting.

Taste

A rush of sweet agave with fruity and herbal undertones including lemon, honeysuckle and white pepper.
Complex and round with some minerality.
Lively and somewhat spicy up front but finishes with gently lingering flavors.

Summary

A luxury tequila expressing the alluring aromas and flavors of blue agave through its proprietary Selective Distillation.
While perfect to sip neat, PaQui’s distinctive taste profile will shine through your favorite mixed drinks.

More information on PaQui Tequila can be found following this link:  www.PaQuiTequila.com

And you can be sure that the Arctic Wolf will provide a full review as soon as he can get his hands on a bottle (or three).

Howling Highlight: Highwood Distillers

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 26, 2010

Last week I took a little holiday from my regular routine and traveled 250 miles south to visit one of the last independent distillers of whisky in Canada. The trip took me 40 miles south of Calgary Alberta, to the town of High River, nestled beside the Rocky Mountains on the western edge of the prairies.

High River is a great little town full of bustle and western charm. I couldn’t resist the urge to spend a little time just driving through the town, visiting a few of the local businesses and taking in the atmosphere of the place and the people. What I found was a town of friendly people with a solid blue collar work ethic. They all seemed to bustling around doing something important. But in spite of this apparent busyness, they were more than happy to help me out with directions to the local sights and even willing to share a story or two about the local history.

Highwood Distillery is the only Albertan owned distillery in the world. It sits in the heart of the High River community, producing 300,000 cases of bottled spirits per year.

If you are interested in learning how Hiaghwood produces their whiskies, rums and vodkas, please click on the link provide for a full report on this uniquely Albertan Distliiery;

The Highwood Distillery Tour

I want to thank the staff at Highwood Distillers for taking the time to provide me with such a nice day at their facilities.   Look for future articles where I will review the samples of White Owl Whisky and Momento Rum which they provided me at the tours conclusion.
