Introducing: Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum

Captain Morgan Rum has just expanded their range of spiced rums to include a new “Black” spiced rum. I suspect that the recent success of  the Kraken Black Spiced Rum has motivated a move in this direction in order to garner a segment of this market. Of course the launch of the Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum was accompanied with a slick media campaign which you are probably aware of already, but in case you are not, I shall relate a little of the information here.

The newest addition to the Captain Morgan Brand was apparently inspired by the story of Captain Morgan’s burial on the shores of Port Royal Harbour, Jamaica in 1688. As it was related to me, an earthquake struck Jamaica, just after the good Captain was buried. His casket was dislodged from its tomb and washed out to sea. It was never recovered, and to this day it has been suggested that perhaps his spirit lives on haunting the seas of the Caribbean searching for his lost remains. The imagery of the background story is captured in the bottle presentation. As the bottle empties, images of Captain Henry Morgan’s casket and skeleton are revealed inside the bottle on the backside of the front label.

In addition to the background story, the promotional information sent to me by the PR firm for Captain Morgan Rum tells me

  “Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum is a mature and carefully crafted spirit that is meant to be savored like a fine whiskey or enjoyed in a classic cocktail. We believe this bold, interesting and unexpected new offering has the potential to make Captain Morgan the preferred spirit among a segment of consumers we don’t currently reach with our existing portfolio.”

In keeping with that claim, the Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum was constructed from a base of Caribbean Blackstrap rum and selected ingredients which include clove spice and cassia bark (cinnamon). The rum was also finished in double charred blackened oak to add additional smoothness and character.

I have been told that this black spiced rum has a bold, edgy look and feel, and is considered to be a complete departure from the Original Spiced Rum. The marketing campaign and the rum are designed a to bring to life the darker, more mysterious side of the real-life brand icon, Captain Henry Morgan. Of course, I cannot confirm nor deny any of the claims as to the quality of the spirit or whether this rum is truly something different…, yet.

Review: Captain Morgan Private Stock

The Captain Morgan Rum Company traces its history back to 1945 when Seagram’s CEO, Samuel Bronfman, negotiated the purchase of the Long Pond Distillery from the Jamaican Government and formed the Captain Morgan Rum Company. The company’s iconic rum brand, Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Rum was based upon a recipe purchased from two local Jamaican pharmacists, the Levy Brothers, who had developed the recipe using rum from the Long Pond Distillery.

The subject of this review, Captain Morgan Private Stock, is the company’s most premium spiced rum. According to the Captain Morgan Website, it is made from the finest of Captain Morgan’s reserves and married with a richer blend of mellow island spices than the regular Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. It is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.

(Note: The Diageo Marketing Team here in Alberta provided me a the sample bottle of this rum for my review.)

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“….If you pour a glass of Captain Morgan Private Stock into a glass side by side with much older rums and ask someone to pick out the younger two year year old rum just by nosing it, I suspect the task will be very difficult. This is surprisingly mellow for a young spiced rum…”

Arctic Wolf’s Christmas Eggnog

I like eggnog at Christmas, and so for the third year in a row I am going to post my favourite recipe for Christmas Eggnog.

This is a simple recipe in terms of ingredients, but it requires a bit of a baker’s touch get it just right. I switched up the Rum and the Whisky in the recipe from last year and found it to be as good as ever.

Arctic Wolf’s Christmas Eggnog
(This makes about four servings. )

3 eggs at room temperature, (yolk and whites separated)
3/8 cup sugar (for the yolks)
3 tablespoons sugar (for the whites)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
a touch fresh ground cloves (About 1/16 of a teaspoon)
a pinch of fresh grated nutmeg (About 1/8 of a teaspoon)
a dash of fresh ground cinnamon (About 3 /16 of a teaspoon)
1 1/2 cups whipping cream, chilled
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup Spiced Rum (George Street Spiced)
2/3 cup Bourbon Whiskey (Knob Creek)

Here is how to make it:

First the yolks

Separate your egg yolks and your egg whites in two bowls. Whisk the first amount of sugar and the vanilla into the egg yolks. Add a touch of  ground cloves, a pinch of nutmeg and a dash of cinnamon into the yolk bowl. Add the cream, the milk and the rum and whisky (for adult consumption only). Make sure everything is mixed thoroughly.

Now the whites

This is where a baker’s touch is necessary.
Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks (3-4 minutes). Add the second amount of sugar slowly during this beating process.

Now we combine

Gently and with large circular motions blend the egg white mixture into the yolk mixture, trying to keep things as ‘poofy’ as possible.

Sprinkle a little left over spice on the top of each glass, and enjoy with your favourite chocolates!

Review: Legendario Ron Anejo

Jesus Lester Pomo (a Cuban National living in Spain) is the Export Manager for Legendario Rums (headquarters in Spain) responsible for the world-wide export of the Legendario line-up. Although the company is headquartered in Spain, the rum itself apparently hails from Cuba. The Legendario Rum arrives from Cuba to Europe via the  Sl Valencia Company. The brand, founded in the city of Havana since 1946, is marketed in the domestic market by the company Cuban Beverages.

The subject of my review, the Legendario Ron Anejo, is produced from a blend of 1, 4, and 6 year-old Cuban Rums which, after blending, are mixed with a small amount of muscatel wine. The blended product is then rested (or married) in American oak barrels for 15 days. The final rum is filtered through a traditional system of activated carbon filters and silica sand before bottling.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…When I bring the glass to my nose, I sense a combination of sweet caramel and dark field berries. There are also rich smells of vanilla and baking spices. As I let the glass decant, a honeyed molasses evolves;  I also begin to sense which seems to be some wisps of dark tobacco and raisins in the aroma…”

Review: Captain Morgan 100 Spiced Rum

The company’s iconic rum brand, Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Rum was based upon a recipe purchased from two local Jamaican pharmacists, the Levy Brothers, who had developed the recipe using rum from the Long Pond Distillery.

The subject of this review,  Captain Morgan 100 Spiced Rum is an overproof variation of the Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. It is bottled at 50 % alcohol by volume rather than at the 35 % alcohol by volume strength of the Original Spiced Rum. The Captain Morgan 100 Spiced Rum is a blend of Caribbean rums which have been aged in white oak barrels.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…The Captain Morgan 100 Proof Spiced Rum however, surprised me in the side by side tasting by carrying less roughness onto the palate. This rum is smoother than its lower proof sibling even though it carries more of an alcoholic punch. The flavours which I associate with good rum like oak spices which meld into a nice rummy caramel are more apparent in the stronger version of the rum…”
