Review: Forty Creek Resolve (2020 Limited Release)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 5, 2020

Forty Creek Whisky has an annual tradition of producing a special limited release whisky which is built upon the foundation of the company’s flagship whisky, Forty Creek Barrel Select. These annual special releases each seek to bring new character to the Forty Creek family.

The 2020 Limited Release, Forty Creek Solve is a tribute to Master Blender Bill Ashburn and his dedication (and resolve) to create some of the most awarded Canadian whiskies over the past 20 years. He constructed this complex whisky with an elevated spice profile rounded out with a drop of vintage Villard Noir Port.

Here is a link to my review for the latest Forty Creek Whisky annual Limited Edition Release:

Review: Forty Creek Resolve (2020 Limited Release)

“… Brown sugar combined with both oak spice and baking spices (Vanilla, cinnamon and cloves with a nice hit of ginger). Walnuts with raisins and dates lurking as well. Graham wafers, marzipan and marmalade make an appearance as the whisky breathes. This is complex and inviting …”

Please enjoy the review which includes my serving suggestion, the Old Fashioned Cocktail.

Review: Six Saints Caribbean Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 4, 2020

Six Saints Rum is apparently a spirit produced an the Isle of Grenada and is named for the island’s six saintly parishes; Saint Patrick, Saint Mark, Saint John, Saint Andrew, Saint George, and Saint David. It is column distilled (from stills  which were originally from Glasgow, Scotland) using only pure ingredients. The Distillery is located in the south of the island, near the capital St. George, and apparently has been producing rum since 1937.  The resulting rum distillate (unsweetened) is typically (and tropically) aged for 3 to 5 years in ex bourbon barrels and bottled in small batches at 41.7 % abv.

Review: Six Saints Caribbean Rum

“… Light and dry across the palate with a fine bite from both alcohol and oak spice. Vanilla, almond and butterscotch play with citrus zest and fine peppery spices. Bits of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger mingle within …”

Please enjoy my review of this clean, crisp rum.

Review: Ron Roble Extra Anejo

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2020

I have been working though the rum selection in 1423 World Class Spirits advent calendar 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box with the aim of providing a short review for each of the selection throughout the month of December. On day three however, when I pulled out my small sample of Ron Roble’s Viejo Maestro Extra Anejo, I found myself puzzled as this rum is not listed on the Ron Roble Viejo website and search though I did, I could find only one reference to the rum on an unfamiliar Czech retail website, and that website did not even have a bottle shot to show me. My conclusion is that the Maestro must be either very new, or an exclusive bottling of 1423 World Class Spirits (or both). I decided that it might be best to save my thoughts on the Maestro until I could gather better information. So I am leaving that bottle sealed and have decided to repost my review for Ron Roble’s selection from last year in the Calendar Advent, Ron Roble Viejo Extra Anejo.

Ron Roble Viejo Rums are produced in Venezuela through the artistry of Ron Noble’s Master Rum Blender, Giorgio Melis, a Chemical Engineer with more than 50 years experience in the spirits industry. The company’s rums are produced from from locally grown sugar cane molasses using a 5 column distillation process and aged in a traditional manner is oak barrels without topping the oak barrels or replenishment of the Angel’s share.

According to the company website, their best reserves from 8 to 12 Years are blended to create the Ron Roble Extra Anejo Rum.

Here is a link to my review published last year on December 21:

Review: Ron Roble Extra Anejo

“… Oak spices deepen and thicken, toffee and dark brown sugar come into focus mixing with baking spices, there are hints of marzipan and apricot jam. The breezes are very enticing …”

Note: 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box produced by 1423 World Class Spirits contains 24 handpicked rums from 24 different countries all over the world. It features an extraordinary opportunity to sample a wide variety of premium rums allowing you to hone in on the particular style which suits your palate. As indicated in my previously published review (here) This Rum Advent Calendar is a highly recommended gift for the rum enthusiast.

Review: Forty Creek Nanaimo Bar Cream

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 3, 2020

Forty Creek has expanded their Cream Liquor portfolio this winter with a new offering inspired by the iconic Canadian dessert, the Nanaimo Bar.  Their Forty Creek Nanaimo Bar Cream is a product of Forty Creek’s finest spirits and fresh dairy cream combined with flavours of chocolate, vanilla, coconut and graham wafer. (A Nanaimo bar is made in three layers, a bottom wafer or cookie usually made with nuts and coconut crumb; a custard icing in the middle; and a layer of thick chocolate cream icing on top.)

The spirit was created to be served over ice, or as a cream supplement with you favourite coffee. I have a few other ideas as you will see in the review.

Here is a link to the full page Review:

Review: Forty Creek Nanaimo Bar Cream

“… The aroma is very reminiscent of true Nanaimo bars albeit with the sweetness of the Canadian confection scaled back by an order of magnitude. That paired back sweetness is a good thing as the sweetness of real Nanaimo bars can overwhelm the palate quickly …”

Please enjoy the review and stay tuned for my upcoming review of Forty Creek Resolve.

Review: Pixan Solera Especial

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 2, 2020

Pixan Rum is produced at Destileria Espiritus del Norte a relatively new distillery located in Monterrey in northeastern Mexico. Apparently Pixan comes to us linguistically from the Mayan people and it is a word which roughly means ‘Spirit which gives life’.

Pixan Solera Especial is sold as a premium Solera aged rum. I visited a few retail websites, and found that most were implying that the spirit was a 6 Year solera aged rum. This would mean the oldest rum in the blend would be aged about 6 years with the average age of the blend being somewhat younger. I also discovered that the solera was comprised of American oak barrels, and also saw evidence that the Pixan rum was finished for at least 3 months in old wine barrels.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Pixan Solera Especial

“… Butterscotch and vanilla lead out accompanied by oak spice and almond flavours. Raisins and grapes can be tasted in the background. Orange peel and light baking spices (cinnamon and ginger) add to a lively mouth feel …”

Please enjoy my review of this new Mexican rum.
