Review: Crown Royal Texas Mesquite

Crown Royal®Canadian Whisky is currently produced in Gimli, Manitoba, at the Crown Royal Distillery. The distillery and the brand are owned by the global spirits conglomerate Diageo, and I think it is fair to say that Crown Royal is Diageo’s flagship Canadian whisky.

Crown Royal Texas Mesquite is a blend of Crown Royal Deluxe which according to the Crown Royal Website has been infused with the smoky soul of locally sourced Texas mesquite wood. The spirit is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume, and sold in the Crown Royal decanter shown below.

“… When I brought the glass to my nose a sour note was evident which was followed by what seemed like a hint of herbal peat which of course is actually the imprint of mesquite wood upon the whisky. A sharp note of orange peel was evident as well. As I let the spirit breathe firm butterscotch, candied orange peel and fine oak spices joined in …”

Review: J.P. Wiser’s Old Fashioned Whisky Cocktail

J.P. Wiser’s was established in 1857, and Hiram Walker & Sons Limited currently produces there whisky at their Windsor, Ontario, distillery. Since 1935, J.P. Wiser’s has been the majority shareholder of Corby Spirit and Wine.

J.P. Wiser’s Old Fashioned Whisky Cocktail is bottles as a ready-to-serve cocktail. According to the company website the spirit is made from quality whisky, orange essence and natural flavour and is meant to bring the experience of the classic Old Fashioned Whisky Cocktail to the consumer in a format where it can be enjoyed or in other convenient settings.

The serving is meant to be enjoyed over ice with perhaps a twist of citrus garnish.

Review: Saddleback Maple Bacon Whisky

Saddleback Maple Bacon Whisky is produced by Proof Brands. The company currently produces whisky, rum and vodka all of which are bottled in unique stubby 500 ml bottles. The brands and the spirits are the creation of Michael Riley, a veteran of the alcohol beverage industry. Michael spent 5 years as the Director of Spirits for the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario). He has also has worked with such brands as Crown Royal, Absolut, Captain Morgan, Chivas Regal and Molson Canadian.

This Little Piggy!

Proof Brand’s Maple Bacon Whisky was released in 2017, marking the 50th Anniversary of the British Saddleback Pig, which they claim is the world’s best hog for bacon. Michael blends his Proof Canadian Whisky(a blend of Canadian prairie rye and wheat which is distilled with pristine water from the Rockies) with natural maple syrup and bacon flavours.

“… The initial aroma speaks loudly to the presence of maple, however there is also a light backdrop of wood spice. As I give the glass time to breathe I begin to glimpse the presence of the smoky bacon aroma. It is somewhat smothered by the overt maple, but hints of a light smoky bacon are evident …”

Review: Last Mountain Prairie Cherry Whisky

The Last Mountain Distillery is part of a small wave of Micro-Distillers which have began to appear on the Canadian landscape over the last few years. These are small ‘mom and pop’ operations which make their spirits in small batches usually only a barrel or two at a time. This particular distillery is located in Lumsden, Saskatchewan, and it is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Colin and Meredith Schmidt.

Last Mountain Prairie Cherry Whisky was launched in December 2014. It is produced by barrel aging the Last Mountain Wheat Whisky with organic sour cherries from Over The Hill Orchards in Lumsden Saskatchewan, and then lightly sweetened the spirit using organic sugar cane.

“… When I took my first sip, I found the spirit did not demonstrate nearly as much sweetness as the nose had indicated. The cherry flavour however, wasn’t what I expected. I was expecting the flavour of a nice ripe BC Cherry, whereas the Saskatchewan Prairie Cherry appears to have a somewhat different flavour. (The Saskatchewan Prairie Cherry were developed at the University of Saskatchewan to be suitably hardy for the cold Saskatchewan prairie winters. Although they are not necessarily sour as the name indicates,they do have a different taste characteristic than the BC Cherry.) I also felt that the underlying whisky seemed to be taking center stage with the flavour of the Saskatchewan Prairie Cherry playing a secondary role …”

Review: Forty Creek Spike Honey Spiced Whisky

FC SpikeForty Creek Spike Honey Spiced Whisky is produced by the Forty Creek Distillery (now owned by Campari). Former owner of the distillery and brand, John Hall is the Whisky Maker (as he likes to refer to himself) at Forty Creek, and this spirit was produced under his direction.

According to the label on the bottle the ingredients are, Canadian Whisky (presumable John Hall’s flagship whisky Forty Creek Barrel Select), sugar, and natural flavors (presumable honey and spices). It is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.

“… The spirit caries a deep golden colour with reddish hues visible in the glass. The breezes are mild, and along with the notes of honey are additional notes of butterscotch, vanilla, banana, ginger and cinnamon …”
