Review: Sortilège Caramel

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 9, 2015

Sortliege CaramelSortilège is a Canadian Whisky based liqueur produced by Mondia Alliance Wine and Spirits in Montreal, Canada. It is produced by combining real Canadian Maple Syrup with Canadian Whisky. Mondia has taken this one step further with their new liqueur, Sortilège Caramel which is described as a Caramel liqueur with Canadian Maple Whisky. In other words a product produced by combining a caramel liqueur with their own Sortilège Maple Whisky. This new liqueur is bottled at 23 % alcohol by volume.

Review: Sortilège Caramel

” … The initial scents from the glass are very much like butterscotch candies, although if we wait a little while a few wood spices and whisky-like scents also present themselves. The whisky-like scents appeal to me, although I wonder to myself if the whisky will have enough punch against the building butterscotch sweetness …”

Review: Sortilège Prestige

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 13, 2013

prestiqueSortilège Prestige is a Canadian Whisky based liqueur produced by Mondia Alliance Wine and Spirits in Montreal, Canada. According to the Sortilège website the product is handcrafted in small batches by combining Canada #1 – Extra Clear Maple Syrup (only available at the first thaw) with a 7 Year Old – 100 % Rye Grain Canadian Whisky. The final product is bottled at 40.9% alcohol by volume and is considered by the producer to be a more premium version of their Sortilège Original.

Review: Sortilège Prestige

“… The flavoured whisky is somewhat ‘thickened’ in my glass displaying a rich brown mahogany/copper colour that actually reminds me of dark maple syrup. The aroma from the glass is very reminiscent of the previously reviewed Sortilège Original, although there is perhaps a stronger push of maple into the breezes above the glass due to the higher alcohol content (40.9% vs 30 %) of the Prestige …”

And to all my fellow Canadians, Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

Review: Sortilège Maple Cream

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 21, 2013

Maple CreamSortilège Maple Cream is a Canadian Whisky based cream liqueur produced by Mondia Alliance Wine and Spirits in Montreal, Canada. It’s construction is apparently based upon an authentic ‘heritage’ recipe using the highest grade all natural Canadian Maple Syrup, farm fresh dairy cream, and authentic Canadian Whisky. The product arrives in a 750 ml bottle and is sold at 17 % alcohol by volume.

You may read my full review of this new whisky based cream liqueur by clicking on the following excerpt:

Review: Sortilège Maple Cream

“… As the glass sits, the light aromas of sweet caramel and maple are brought forward with nice accents of chocolate, coffee, and hazelnuts. There is a very light spiciness apparent giving me glimpses fresh sandalwood and ever so light hints of cinnamon, ginger and rye spice …”

Review: Forty Creek Cream Liquor

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 5, 2013

Forty Creek CreamForty Creek Whisky expanded their portfolio last fall with three new whisky products added in time for Christmas, Copper Pot Reserve, Portwood Reserve 2012, and Forty Creek Cream Liquor. Copper Pot Reserve is a new premium whisky built upon the success of the distilleries flagship brand Forty Creek Barrel Select, and Portwood Reserve 2012 is the second edition bottling of their successful Portwood Reserve which was originally released in 2009. Something a little different for the distillery is their new Forty Creek Cream Liquor. This Cream Liquor is a product of fresh dairy cream blended with Forty Creek’s finest spirits and of course their award-winning Forty Creek Whisky. It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and is meant as an after dinner drink to be sipped on its own or in your afternoon coffee.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… The Forty Creek Cream displays itself in the glass a rich light caramel/beige colour with a smooth creamy texture. The nose brings forth nuances of creamy chocolate, butterscotch/caramel, vanilla, hints of cinnamon, and light almost indistinguishable dabs of cocoa and coffee. A mild spicy influence of Canadian Whisky drifts into the breezes above the glass as well …”

Review: Wild Cinnamon Whisky Liqueur

Posted by Arctic Wolf on August 5, 2012

Highwood Distillers is a Canadian spirits manufacturer in the town of High River, Alberta, which is situated 40 minutes south of Calgary, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Recently, I visited this distillery, and watched first hand as they turned the local prairie grains into whisky, vodka. and gin. They make their spirits one batch at a time in a family style atmosphere which could not help but make me a fan.

Recently I received a sample of their Wild Cinnamon Whisky Liqueur. The spirit represents a fusion of Canadian Whisky and aromatic cinnamon. No artificial flavours or additives (except caramel for colour) have been used in the production of this whisky liqueur which is bottled at 36 % alcohol by volume.

Here is an excerpt from my resulting review:

“… When I pour the liquid from the bottle into my glass and bring it to my nose, what I smell first and foremost is cinnamon. In fact the aroma is very reminiscent of those little red cinnamon heart candies which are all the rage on Valentines Day. Under this obvious cinnamon scent are some indications of whisky, but these whisky accents are only that, accents upon a strong cinnamon presence… “
