Forty Creek Heritage

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 26, 2017

Forty Creek Founder John Hall with some of his award winning Whiskies!

It’s that time of year again as each year in May or June, Forty Creek Whisky announces their annual special limited release whisky. This years release has been named Forty Creek Heritage, and it is an homage to their first ever, and most sought after release, Forth Creek Three Grain.

Once again the Forty Creek Distillery has invited the public to participate in this special release by offering to let you choose your own numbered bottle.

According to the press release I received yesterday, this special whisky was crafted from specially selected barrels of corn, rye, and barley whiskies.  The blended whiskies were finished in toasted American Oak barrels (as opposed to more traditionally used charred American Oak) to release more elegant vanilla flavours and to highlight the bold wood spices of the toasted oak. Less than 16,500 bottles will be released across both Canada and the United States at a retail price of $74.95.

This year the process to reserve you own special bottle is a little different from before:

How to Reserve Your Bottle:

  1. Visit www.fortycreekwhisky.com
  2. Choose the ‘Whisky Weekend’ option from the top menu, then select the ‘Bottle Reservations’ option from the sub-menu.
  3. You will be prompted to either ‘Login’, or ‘Create an account’.  If it is your first time visiting, select the ‘Create an Account’ option and fill in the appropriate information.
  4. As part of the registration process, Forty Creek asks that you provide a mobile phone number.  This will help us to better fulfill your order on Whisky Weekend – we will be able to message you know when your bottle is ready for pickup! (I do not use a mobile phone nor do I ever disclose a phone number just to make a retail purchase so for me this may be problematic.)
  5. Once your account has been created, you will be prompted to select a number.  If your number has already been chosen by someone else, you will receive an error message and be asked to try another number.
  6. This year, you must pay a $20, non-refundable deposit to reserve your bottle.  This is to ensure that more numbers are available to be reserved by true Forty Creek fans. The $20.00 amount will be deducted from the total purchase price of your bottle of Forty Creek Heritage when you pick it up from our retail store.

THE RESERVATION WINDOW WILL BE OPEN FOR ONE WEEK, BEGINNING MONDAY JUNE 26th.

Numbers will be reserved on a first come, first served basis.  Due to provincial and federal regulations, the bottle reservation offer is only available in Ontario, Canada as unfortunately, Forty Creek cannot ship bottles, and they must be purchased and picked up at the Forty Creek distillery in Grimsby, Ontario. (I usually have a friend pick up my bottles for me.)

Normally when I get these press releases from Forty Creek, some tasting notes and a little more information about the whisky is available (such as the bottling proof) to assist the consumer in making their purchase decision. Hopefully I will soon receive little more information as well as a bottle shot to add to this posting.

#24 Canadian Whisky – Forty Creek Heart of Gold

Posted by Arctic Wolf on December 2, 2013

rum_howler_badge- 25WHISKYThis year John Hall (Whisky Maker, Forty Creek Distillery) launched a new rye forward Forty Creek blend, Heart of Gold (2013 Limited Release). Heart of Gold, like all of John Hall’s whisky blends, is distilled from three separate grains: barley (which adds soft nutty flavours); corn (which adds weight and body) and of course rye (which adds flavour and spice). Although all three grains are used, the clear intention of Mr. Hall in creating this whisky was to showcase the spicy, fruity and floral notes of Canadian Rye.

Heart_of_Gold_bottleAccording to John Hall:

“This project started nearly a decade ago, focusing specifically on Canada’s noble rye grain. I have always brought out the spicy, fruity notes of rye in my whiskies, but this time, I wanted to perfect how to capture the underlying delicate floral notes of the rye that too often get lost in the process.“

My tasting panel agrees that the noble rye grain is worth exploring as the Heart of Gold was determined to be Number 24 on my Top 25 Canadian Whisky Countdown.

Here is a link to my most recent  review:

#24 Canadian Whisky – Forty Creek Heart of Gold

“… The initial nose reminds me strongly of rye whisky as I remember it from my youth (seventies/early eighties). The breezes above the glass are full of wood spices (cardamom, ginger, sandalwood, sawdust and white pepper), and those breezes remind me of autumns past when the ripened grain in the fields was being combined. The air all around the farm would be full of the scents and smells of the harvest, complete with the straw left behind in windrows and the separated chaff and grain dust floating in the air above the fields and granaries …”

Review: Canada Gold Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 9, 2013

Canada GoldCanada Gold Whisky has proven to be a hard whisky to get my hands on. I first encountered it when I was one of the judges for the Canadian Whisky Awards, but all of my attempts to retrieve a bottle for review seemed thwarted as the product appears to have only a limited production in the Province of Ontario. It is produced at the Forty Creek Distillery (formerly Kittling Ridge Estate Wines & Spirits), the same distillery that produces Forty Creek Whisky, but I have noticed recently that the Forty Creek website no longer mentions this brand as a core product. My persistence finally paid of a few months ago, when a friend of mine in Ontario emailed me and said that he had found a bottle and was willing to share it with me. I received my portion of the bottle when another mutual friend was travelling and brought me 200 ml which had been drawn from the bottle.

Canada Gold is a value priced whisky produced at 40 per cent alcohol by volume (mainly for the Ontario Market).

Review: Canada Gold Whisky

“… The aroma rising up out of the glass surprised me by its moderate complexity. Butterscotch and wood spice mix with dank tones of corn in the breezes above the glass. I sense some spicy tobacco and pleasant rye spice drifting into the breezes as well. Within all of this is a gentle sweep of vanilla …”

Please enjoy this review, which includes a recipe suggestion based upon the popular Cuba Libre’ Cocktail. When I mix this cocktail with Canadian Whisky instead of rum, I call it the Free Spirit.

Cheers Everyone!

Review: Forty Creek Cream Liquor

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 5, 2013

Forty Creek CreamForty Creek Whisky expanded their portfolio last fall with three new whisky products added in time for Christmas, Copper Pot Reserve, Portwood Reserve 2012, and Forty Creek Cream Liquor. Copper Pot Reserve is a new premium whisky built upon the success of the distilleries flagship brand Forty Creek Barrel Select, and Portwood Reserve 2012 is the second edition bottling of their successful Portwood Reserve which was originally released in 2009. Something a little different for the distillery is their new Forty Creek Cream Liquor. This Cream Liquor is a product of fresh dairy cream blended with Forty Creek’s finest spirits and of course their award-winning Forty Creek Whisky. It is bottled at 15 % alcohol by volume, and is meant as an after dinner drink to be sipped on its own or in your afternoon coffee.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“… The Forty Creek Cream displays itself in the glass a rich light caramel/beige colour with a smooth creamy texture. The nose brings forth nuances of creamy chocolate, butterscotch/caramel, vanilla, hints of cinnamon, and light almost indistinguishable dabs of cocoa and coffee. A mild spicy influence of Canadian Whisky drifts into the breezes above the glass as well …”

Introducing: Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve

Posted by Arctic Wolf on August 20, 2012

Forty Creek Distillery, formerly Kittling Ridge Estate Wines & Spirits, has announced the September release of their new Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve. Made in the same style, as the Forty Creek Barrel Select (See my write-up here: John Hall and Whisky: A Good Meritage), Forty Creek Copper Pot Reserve is blended to be bold, complex, and flavourful. In fact, with the Forty Creek Copper Pot whisky, Master Distiller and Whisky Maker, John Hall has promised that he has ‘amped up’ the flavour to deliver a deeper and richer taste profile through patient extra aging in white oak barrels, and careful selection of whisky stocks.

The Copper Pot Reserve Whisky will be bottled at 43% alcohol by volume to complement the depth of flavour in this bold Canadian Whisky.

Here are the tasting notes from the distillery:

“… Deep copper (amber) colour. Bold aromas of toffee, nuts and spice. Dried stone fruits follow through on a smooth, supple entry.  Full bodied with rich brown spice notes and hints of marmalade. Finishes with a long, sensual fade. A whisky worthy savouring…”

Sadly, it seems this may be an Ontario only release.  I may have negotiate a road trip!

For those who are interested, here are my reviews for some of the other Forty Creek Whiskies from John Hall:

Cheers Everyone!
