Review: El Dorado 5 Year Cask Aged Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 29, 2018

The Diamond Distillery sits on the East Bank of the Demerara River near Georgetown, Guyana. The Distillery, originally attached to the now closed Diamond Sugar Estate, is home to Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL).

According to the El Dorado Website, the El Dorado 5 Year Cask Aged Rum obtains unique character comes from the blending of traditional aged rums from the Uitvlugt Savalle Still and one of the most famous Coffey stills in the entire world, The EHP Wooden Still or Wooden Continuous Coffey. In my past writings I have stated that I consider the EHP Wooden Coffey Still to be one of the Great Wonders of the Rum World. It was constructed in 1880 at the Enmore Estate (over 130 years ago), and it continues to operate at the Diamond Distillery today. The use of these ancient stills ensures that the Demerara Rum produced at DDL’s Diamond Distillery is unlike anything produced anywhere else in the world. (For more information on the unique Heritage Stills in operation at the Diamond distillery you may read my first hand account here (Diamond Distillery Tour).

Review: El Dorado 5 Year Cask Aged Rum

“… As soon as the bottle was opened, I noticed a firm aroma of coarse toasted brown sugar with hints of baking spices (vanilla and cinnamon) in the merry little breezes above the bottle. As the bottle was poured the glass, the slightly bitter smell of oak tannins and wood sap joined in. As I allowed the glass to breathe the oaken smells seemed to meld with the brown sugar and baking spices. There were indications of toasted coconut, almond, as well as some orange peel and banana: however these indications appear as mere accents upon the dominant characteristics of oak, rummy dark brown sugar and baking spice …”

Please enjoy the revised review which contains fuller descriptions of the spirit, its heritage, and no less than three suggested servings.

Review: High River Canadian Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 27, 2018

The explosion of new Canadian Whisky brands continues as every time I venture into a local liquor store I see new brands that I have never tried before. And each year when I serve as a Spirits Judge for the Annual Canadian Whisky Awards, I am introduced to new brands which I was otherwise unaware of. One of these new brands, High River Canadian is owned by Sazerac, the producers of Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon.

Master Blender Drew Mayville (Buffalo Trace), oversees the blending of the High River Canadian Whisky. According to the Sazerac website:

The best Canadian whiskies are made from rye grown in the prairies, and the most fertile soils are near local rivers which occasionally overflow during the spring thaw. High River takes its name from this phenomenon, and delivers a smooth finish which leaves a lasting impression.

Review: High River Canadian Whisky

“… There is a light impression of maple and cedar which combine with grain to give me an impression of graham wafers dipped in syrup. Oak builds with vanilla and almond making me think of marzipan. Marmalade and chocolate complete the nose which seems to be rich and full of whisky goodness …”

Please enjoy my review which includes a nice recipe suggestion, the Bitter Chocolate Old Fashioned.

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Anejo Mezcal

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 25, 2018

I hosted a tequila tasting for several of my friends in my tasting group and as part of the event, everyone was encouraged to bring along a new agave spirit that the group had never tasted before. One of my friends brought two bottles from Leyenda de Milagro, the first a Silver 100 % Agave Tequila, and the other, an Anejo 100% agave Mezcal. I reviewed the Silver Tequila last week (see here) and this is the review for the Anejo Mescal.

Researching the mescal proved quite difficult, as at first I could find no evidence that the product even existed. The spirit was not listed anywhere, nor was it shown on Leyenda del Milagro’s website.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Leyenda del Milagro Anejo Mezcal

“… The aroma from the glass is very interesting. If I placed the spirit in a line-up with several Bowmore Whiskies, it would take a few moments before anyone would notice that it was out-of-place. That is because the Mezcal brings a similar assortment of herbal phenols to the breezes and in fact these phenols bear a striking resemblance to the oily peat that is characteristic of Bowmore whisky …”

Please enjoy my review.

Review: Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Port (2010)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 24, 2018

The Fladgate Partnership owns three important Port houses, Taylor’s Port (Taylor Fladgate), Fonseca, and Croft’s. Of the three, Taylor’s is the oldest and most influential, founded in 1692 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal by Job Bearsley. Although ownership of the company has moved through a variety of families, Taylor’s is (and has been since inception) independently owned and managed.

The wines used in the Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage 2010 Port blend are drawn from a reserve of full-bodied red ports which were produced from the 2010 harvest, from grapes grown on Taylor’s own vineyards and on other top properties in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas. This wine remained in wood about five years and was bottled in 2015.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Taylor Fladgate Late Bottled Vintage Port (2010)

“… I taste ripe plums, black raspberries, and spicy raisins which bring a mild impression of cinnamon to the fore. I also taste lightly bitter grape skins (tannins) which pucker my mouth slightly and add to an impression of moderate acidity …”

Please enjoy my first wine review of 2018.

Review: Jamaican Lion Dark Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 22, 2018

Jamaica Lion Rums are produced and bottled by Royal Jamaica Rums who are headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. Royal Jamaican Rums originated at the Monymusk distillery which is one of the oldest plantations on the Island of Jamaica. It is located on the south side of Jamaica in St. Catherine ‘s Town, and has been producing Rum since the 18th century.

Jamaica Lion Dark Rum is imported into the USA by International Distillers and Vinters who are situated in Everett, Washington. My sample bottle arrived to me via a good friend who recently traveled to Jamaica. He purchased the bottle at one of the Duty Free shops on his way home and brought it over to share with me after his vacation. The Dark Rum is bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Jamaican Lion Dark Rum

“… The flavour is similar to a mixture of vanilla extract, treacle and light molasses. (In case you are wondering dark treacle has a flavour resembling charred caramel with a slightly bitter aftertaste.) Although it was not apparent on the nose, there is a light oak spiciness apparent …”

Please enjoy my review!
