#Top100CanadianWhisky #38: Whistle Pig Straight Rye Whisky

Whistle Pig 10 Year Old Rye Whiskey is an interesting whiskey. It is a 10 Year Old Rye Whiskey which began its life as part of the blending stocks at a distillery in Alberta Canada (almost certainly Alberta Distillers in Calgary Alberta). This spirit was purchased by Whistle Pig Whiskey and transported to the Whistle Pig Farm in Shoreham Vermont where it was finished in once used bourbon barrels. According to my discussions with the local rep for Whistle Pig, because the whiskey was not aged for the entire maturation period in Canada, it is technically not a Canadian Whiskey (which must be aged only in Canada). It does though, meet the requirement in the USA to be bottled as a Straight Rye Whiskey.

“… The initial aroma from the glass is full of burly rye notes with accents of maple and wood spice. Both oak and cedar are present with firm vanillans and spicy wood sap. Some dusty dry grain is evident as well …”

Note: The heritage of Whistle Pig as a whisky distilled and produced in Alberta, Canada is sufficient for me to place the spirit upon my list of Best Canadian Whiskies of 2017. I am after all judging whisky not rabbits, and I see no need for spitting hares.

#Top100CanadianWhisky: #40 Throttle 2 Bottle

Throttle 2 Bottle (T2B) is Canadian Whisky sold in the USA by Bighorn Spirits located in Sheridan Wyoming. Bighorn Spirits has apologetically patriotic  website which embraces the freedoms granted to citizens of the US by their constitution. Linked to their patriotic spirit is a true zest for social responsibility as website links the freedoms enjoyed to the duty of the people to uphold state laws with respect to responsible consumption of alcohol.

Then Bighorn goes further with their own social promise:

For every case sold, Throttle 2 Bottle will donate $1 to a veteran, military family or military cause state by state! We will find local organizations in each state that T2B is distributed and sold.

#Top100Rums of 2017: #38 Rhum Barbancourt 15 Year Old

Rhum Barbancourt is distilled and produced by Societe du Rhum Barbancourt,  in Port Au Prince on the Isle of Haiti.

The word “rhum” is the French spelling for our English word “rum”. However, the differences between Rhum and Rum are often much deeper than just a twist in spelling. This is because the traditions of making rhum in the French West Indies differs from the traditions of rum production in the rest of the Caribbean. The major difference in the production of Agricole Rum is that it is distilled from fermented sugar cane juice rather than fermented molasses. As well Rhum Agricole is usually single distilled to 70 per cent abv., and then brought to bottling proof after it is aged.

At Rhum Barbancourt, things are done a little differently, as a second distillation brings their rhum to 90 % abv. after which it is reduced to about 50 % abv. before being aged in oak (in both large oak ‘vats’ and smaller barrels). The Rhum Barbancout Estate Reserve is bottled at 43 % alcohol by volume.

#Top100CanadianWhisky #44: Pemberton Valley Organic Single Malt Whisky

The Pemberton Distillery is located in the heart of the Coast Mountains, an area known for its massive ice caps and pure glacial streams. The Master Distiller, Tyler Schramm, studied a Masters of Science in Brewing & Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

They distill in small batches using a hand-operated copper pot still, and the entire distillation is performed by Tyler Schramm, who is continuously testing and sampling the distillate for quality.

All that care and attention which the distillery displayed in producing their organic vodka has also been turned towards their production of Single Malt Whisky. According to the Pemberton Distillery website the spirit is:

” A true West Coast style single malt Whisky. Pot distilled in small batches from organic BC malted barley …”

#Top100Rums of 2017 – #42 El Dorado 8 Year Old

According to the El Dorado Website, the El Dorado 8 Year old Cask Aged Rum is blended from selected stocks of rum which were produced from no less than four of DDL’s traditional Heritage Stills including both the original Wooden Coffey Still which was rescued from the Enmore Estate and the Double Wooden Pot Still which was rescued from the Port Mourant Estate. Each of these stills is well over 200 years old and they represent the last of their kind operating in the world today. The use of these ancient stills ensures that the Demerara Rum produced at DDL’s Diamond Distillery is unlike anything produced anywhere else in the world.
