Review: Bombay Sapphire Gin

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 8, 2010

Bombay Sapphire Gin is distributed by Bacardi.  It was launched in 1987 and draws its unusual name from a marketing competition where several marketing agencies were asked to submit possible new names and bottle designs for Bacardi’s new Gin.  The chosen name refers to an Indian heritage of gin, as it was an extremely popular drink during the time of the British Raj.  The Star of Bombay is a famous Indian Sapphire now on display at the Smithsonian Institute.

Bombay Sapphire Gin is considered a London Dry Gin.  This refers to the process of distillation and not the current origin of the gin.  London Dry Gin is made through a double distillation of a neutral grain spirit with botanicals added during the second distillation.  The ten botanicals listed on the Bombay Sapphire website are: Spanish almonds and lemon peel, West African grains of paradise, Chinese licorice, juniper berries from Tuscany, orris root from Italy, angelica root from Saxony, coriander seed from Morocco, cassio bark from Indo China, and cubeb berries from Java.

It will be most interesting to see what this bevy of ingredients from around the world has imparted into the spirit.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…I am a naive son of a gun.  I actually expected a light blue coloured gin to flow out of the bottle the first time I poured it.  Alas, the bottle is blue, not the gin.  It is a clear colourless liquid which imparts just a very light sheen of oil on the side of my glass.  The aroma from the glass is   a clean aroma with a piny (juniper) citrus note…”

Review: Hiram Walker Special Old Canadian Rye Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on July 4, 2010

Hiram Walker Special Old Canadian Rye Whisky, is part of the stable of Canadian whiskies produced and owned by Corby Distilling Ltd. I was presented with a bottle of this whisky about eleven weeks ago by the Brand Ambassador for Corby and Wiser’s, Robert Carson.  This was part of a larger allotment of samples which was provided when they learned I planned to do a series of reviews of their whiskies on my blog. The bottle is labeled as a Canadian Rye Whisky and is bottle at 40 % alcohol by volume.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…Omigosh! The whisky fairly explodes into the mouth full of dry aggressive flavour and spice.  Rye, toffee, and citrus fruit all seem to jump onto the palate at once and battle for supremacy. A thin layer of honey underneath provides a counterbalance, and a nice wave of oak spice is inter-wound throughout the delivery….”

Review: Mocambo 20 Anos Anejo Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 30, 2010

I have developed many new friendships since I started blogging about rum and whisky.   In fact,  I have a little tasting/get together every two weeks or so, and I usually invite some of my old friends, and some of my new friends.  The idea is that we each bring something to try;  we taste it together;  and we learn what we like and dislike.

One of my new friends, (Jason from the Ministry of Rum) brought a bottle of  20 year old Mexican rum to the gathering about two months ago.   After the tasting he generously left me with enough rum to complete a review.  (I am blessed to have generous friends).

The Ron Mocambo 20 year old rum is distilled by Licores Veracruz, S.A. de C.V.  According to their website the 20 year old edition which I sampled is called The Art Edition.   The Art Edition is a throwback style of rum which uses  old techniques of production, and then combines those techniques with modern aging to produce an aged rum of very unique taste and character.

Here is an excerpt from the review:

“…The Macombo 20 Art Edition is a style of rum that genuflects at the altar of old wood without apology. The rum embraces its age,  and its time spent in wooden casks.  In fact I would say the Macombo Art Edition is a celebration of old wood and cask aging….”

I should add that this review was first published on Rum Connection. A great site that is well worth visiting!

Review: Glenmorangie Nectar D’or Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 28, 2010

Glenmorangie was amongst the first Scotch distilleries (1960s) to use ex bourbon barrels to age their whisky rather than Spanish oak (IE: sherry casks). This helped to change the taste profile of their Scottish whisky in a significant manner, and today ex bourbon barrels are use extensively alongside ex sherry casks in many Scottish distilleries. In 1996, Glenmorangie introduced their wood finish range which began the experimentation with a range of new wood finishes like port wood casks and wine barriques. These wood finished products are now used by many distilleries and once again Glenmorangie can claim credit for helping to extend  the range of the taste profile of Scottish whisky.

The Nectar D’or is a mature Glenmorangie (at least ten years old) that is aged in ex bourbon casks and then finished or ‘extra matured’ in Sauternes wine barriques.  The use of the Sauternes wine casks  gives the Nectar D’or a touch of grape sweetness.  This sweeter  ‘white wine or grape’ character is evident in the tasting and review notes that follow.

Here is an excerpt from my review:

“…When the Nectar D’or is poured into the glass I immediately recognize a light aroma of soft white wine rising into the air beside the more familiar Scotch whisky aroma.  I smell oak spices with trails of vanilla and honey accented by that light white wine scent.  The aroma is very complex, and it includes sharper citrus scents of lemon and fresh orange .  I find this extremely inviting….”

Rum Review: Diplomatico Reserva 8 Anos

Posted by Arctic Wolf on June 20, 2010

Many months ago I opened my blog with 16 rum reviews which I had written as mad ramblings on the Ministry of Rum.  At the time I had no intention of ever being a spirits writer, I was just sharing my thoughts on various rums using my own unique system of scoring and basically having fun.  Included in those sixteen reviews were my early reviews of  Diplomatico Anejo, and Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva.  Although the reviews were in many ways cursory, and lacking depth, they nonetheless were noticed by the importers of Diplomatico in my home province, (PB Beverages) and a solid friendly relationship was established. Then recently, I was given a bottle of Diplomatico Reserva, and asked to provide a review such that all three of the major Diplomatico products would be present on my Blog.  There is no point denying my pleasure at this request.  Diplomatico is one of my most favoured spirits companies when it comes to deep rich flavourful rum.  So I accepted the rum sample with no hesitation, and after spending some time getting to know the Reserva, I am happy to share the results of my review with you.
