Review: Offrian Rum (Aged 12 Years)

Offrian Rum is a Panamanian Rum produced at the Las Cabras Distillery (formerly the abandoned San Carlos Distillery). This distillery uses a rebuilt copper column still which was manufactured in Cincinnati and dated to 1922.

The 12 Year rum was aged in white oak casks and bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume.

“… Butterscotch and vanilla lead out with a dusting of oak spices following. This actually smells like the butterscotch candies I used to enjoy when I was a youngster. There is a light indication of orange peel and hints of cinnamon as well as almond. As the glass breathes I sense a light buildup of fine oak spice, as well as more sweetness in the air …”

Review: Roca Patrón Anejo Tequila

Roca Patrón Tequila is a pure 100% Agave Tequila made from agave grown in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The agave is 6 to 7 years old when harvested, and the heart of the plant or the piña is all that is used. After harvest the piñas are chopped in half by hand and slowly steamed in masonry brick ovens for about 79 hours to soften them. The softened piñas are then shredded and placed into a traditional stone pit, where they are crushed by a large 2 ton stone milling wheel called a Tahona.

Roca Patrón Anejo Tequila is distilled twice in copper pot stills , and then aged for about 14 months in used American oak bourbon barrels. The lightly aged spirit is bottled at 44 % alcohol by volume.

“… Fruity, punky, aggressive agave with a light sweetness combines with vanilla and more oak than I would have thought for a spirit rested for only 14 months. The agave sort of hangs in the air giving us notes of banana, grilled plantain, and baked squash. There is also a larger amount of black and white pepper apparent than I found in the blanco and reposado versions of the Roca Patron …”

Review: Laird of Fintry Single Malt (Okanagan Spirits)

Laird of Fintry Single Malt is produced in small batches at the Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery. This whisky came to my attention when I was acting as a juror for the 2022 Canadian Whisky Awards. I ear marked my blind sample (No. 28 by the way) as one which stood out in its grouping and after the judging was complete and the whiskies were unblinded, I decided I should take the remainder of my sample and write up more detailed tasting notes. I was not surprised that Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery was named 2022 Canadian Whisky Awards Craft Distillery of the Year based on the strength of this and the other whiskies in their growing portfolio.

Laird of Fintry Single Malt  is a bit of a unicorn. The spirit is available only once per year via a lottery drawing at the Distillery. It is produced using 100% B.C. malted barley and aged in both French and American Oak casks.

“… Heather, meadow grass and flowers, willow with a light sweetness riding the wind currents.  Mint, hints of vanilla and almond. The scents and smells are pleasant and engaging with a lightly herbal character accented by floral impressions. I like the nose which demonstrates nuance and finesse …”

Review: Levenswater Spring 34 Gin

Levenswater Gin is produced in Ontario Canada by Niagara Falls Craft Distillery. It is part of a family of spirits which includes Levenswater Spring 34 Gin, Levenswater Harvest Gin as well as the Levenswater Barrel Aged 34 Gin. These spirits are produced from a base distilled from potatoes with botanicals which have been selected to represent the seasonality of the spirit, fall botanicals selected for the Harvest Gin and spring botanicals selected for the Spring 34 Gin.  The barrel Aged Gin is apparently a version of the Spring 34 Gin which has been aged in oak for 3 months.

This is the review for Levenswater Spring 34 Gin which has been infused with the flavours from with 34 botanicals. The actual botanical recipe for the gin has not to my knowledge been revealed, but they were apparently inspired by the aromas and spices one encounters in Toronto’s nearby Kensington Market. According to the producer’s website information, we can expect this gin to be uniquely Canadian with spring-like flavours and aromas of lavender, coriander, chamomile and rosemary.

“… Mild lavender and other floras (chamomile perhaps) combined with spicy coriander and ginger. Juniper, mild licorice-like anise and an earthiness akin to angelica root becoming more focused as I let the glass breathe. Other botanical impressions are hard to ferret out. I might even make the suggestion that things are a little muddled with too many competing components …”

Review: Lamb’s Navy Rum  (80 Proof)

This review concludes my journey through the Lamb’s family of rums which I embarked on earlier this year.

In Canada, Lamb’s is one of the most popular rum brands. This brand traces its history all the way back to 1849 when Alfred Lamb opened his wine and spirits business in London. His original Navy Rum is reported to have been a blend of 18 separate rums from various parts of the Caribbean. Alfred Lamb’s method of aging his rum in cellars under the Thames River is said to be one of the secrets behind the unexpectedly smooth taste and popularity of his rum.

The Lamb’s brand was licensed for North American production to Corby Distillers in 1952 and since that time Lamb’s rum has been part of the Corby portfolio of spirit brands. (Halewood Artisanal Spirits hold the license to bottle the brand in Europe, Africa and Asia.)

In North America, the main portfolio of Lamb’s Rums includes, Lamb’s Classic White Rum, Lamb’s Spiced Rum, Lamb’s Palm Breeze, and Lamb’s Navy Rum (which is sold both at 80 proof as well as an overproof 151).

“… The first sip brings firm impressions of sweet molasses and caramel with ribbons of licorice and tobacco running right through. I also taste impressions of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and brown sugar. My feeling is that the rum is a fairly standard dark rum which relies on added caramel and/or molasses to achieve the desired colour and flavour profile …”
