Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 14, 2020

Pusser’s Rum is advertised as the original rum of the British Royal Navy. And it is a fact that for over 300 years it was a tradition of the British Navy that each member of the crew was issued a daily ‘tot’ of rum. This tradition began in 1655, and by 1731, the tradition of the daily ‘tot’ was in general use throughout the British Navy. As it was the ship’s purser who was responsible for issuing the rum, the tot of rum became known as Pusser’s Rum in a sort of slang derivation of the term ‘Purser’s Rum’. Although the naval tradition of the daily tot had ended, in 1979  Charles Tobias obtained the rights for the British Naval Rum, and formed Pusser’s Ltd. on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

When I recently received rum samples from 1423 World Class Spirits, I noticed that the label on the Pusser’s Gunpowder Rum stated the rum is bottled by Pusser’s Rum LTD. (British Virgin Islands), and that it is a product of Guyana. This is a departure from my previously reviewed Pusser’s Gunpowder Rum which was sent to me two years ago (which was a Product of Barbados). It is also a departure from the product as advertised on the Pusser’s Website which is stated to be a product of of the  Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados.

I suspect that Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum changes its lineage based upon which blending rums are more economical, or perhaps different markets receive different blends, based upon the export market’s presumed preferences.

Here is a link to the review for the Guyanese version of the ovenproof Gunpowder Rum:

Review: Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum (Guyana)

“… I notice aromas of dark brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, herbal pot still esters, and very light oak spice. As the glass sits, baking spices begin to evolve, I receive impressions of cinnamon buns, hints of licorice and tar and a hit of molasses …”

Please enjoy this expanded version of my review which now includes a cocktail suggestion, the Zombie.

Review: Canadian Club Chronicles 41 Year Old

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 12, 2020

A couple of years ago Canadian Club released what was possibly possibly the oldest bottling of Canadian whisky to date. After 40 years of resting in American oak barrels in Windsor, Ontario, Canadian Club released Canadian Club 40 Year Old

According to my sources, the whisky was produced from a selection of American Oak barrels which contained 100% corn whisky. These barrels had been consolidated many times over the course of 40 years to minimize the oxidation of the spirit during its lengthy maturation period. The whisky has been released in part to commemorate Canada’s 150 Anniversary, and was available with full distribution across Canada as of Mid November in limited quantities.

Fortunately for all of us not all of that wonderful whisky was bottled in 2017. Some of the whisky was allowed to continue to rest. In the fall of 2018, Canadian Club released more of this spirit as Canadian Club Chronicles 41 Year Old and this time it was blended with a small amount of cognac, rye and sherry.

This is the review for the 41 year old whisky which was bottled at 45 % alcohol by volume.

Review: Canadian Club Chronicles 41 Year Old

“… The aroma in the breezes above the glass offers seem to entice me. The whisky brings a waft oak sappy oak into the air followed by a combination of butterscotch toffee, almond syrup, oak and vanilla which were all melded wonderfully together. There are hints of mustiness and scents of fresh corn, light baking spices, and orange peel moving towards marmalade …”

Please enjoy my review and stay tuned for the upcoming review of the 42 Year Old Spirit which I will be sampling over the next few weeks.

#Ginuary Review: Black Fox Gin #3

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 10, 2020

Black Fox Distillery (located at 245 Valley Road Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) was founded by John Cote and Barb Stefanyshyn-Cote, two third generation farmers who have farmed, studied, consulted and participated in agriculture on five different continents.

John told me that their distillery is a bit different from most of the others in the area as John and Barb ferment, distill and age all of their spirits right there at the distillery.  According to John, in Saskatchewan approximately 90% of craft distilled products are coming from NGS (nuetral grain spirit) purchased from large manufactures. Black Fox Distillery is trying to show the world that there should be a bit more craft in craft spirits.

Black Fox Gins are numbered because they are hand made in single batches. Each time, depending on the ingredients John and Barb have in their fields, the batch will be little bit different than the last one. In the case of Black Fox Gin #3, it is constructed from a recipe of 15 different spices and flowers which includes Calendula flowers and rhubarb grown on the distillery farm. Triticale (a hybrid of wheat and rye) distillate is used as the base spirit.

Here is a link to my review of Black Fox Gin #3:

Review: Black Fox Gin #3

“… subdued notes of juniper and coriander/cardamom rising into the breezes. The gin has a light floral quality which may be indicative of the Calendula flowers although with fifteen botanicals in all we very well may have other botanicals contributing as well …”

Please enjoy the review which includes my recipe for the wonderful Black Fox #3 Gin and Tonic.

Review: Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 8, 2020

This past Christmas, I reviewed the 24 Rums which were featured in the 1423 World Class Spirits – 2019 24 Days of Rum Calendar. The reviews were written based upon my my taste impressions from a small (20ml) sample of each rum which was provided in the European edition of that said rum advent.

I was also sent larger 50ml samples of each rum in the American version of that same rum advent and during the New Year with more time to evaluate each spirit and with a larger sample I have been able to more fully round out each of these reviews adjusted the scores to more accurately reflect my feelings towards each spirit.

Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva is produced at he Hacienda Agicola in Chiclayo, an small enclave near the sea in Northern Peru. This new rum has been produced from an original recipe, and is designed to be a lighter fresher version of Ron Millonario yet with the same rich raisin-like flavour profile the brand is known for.

Here is a link to my tasting notes and scores for the second spirit in the 24 Days of Rum – The Original Rum Tasting Box:

Review: Ron Millonario 10 Anniversario Reserva

“… If you do not like sweet rums then this is one to leave alone. However, if you do not mind the more honeyed path, then this rum is for you as it is full of yummy flavours of caramel, chocolate and cocoa. There is just enough oak character and spice to contrast the sweetness …”

#Ginuary Review: Burwood Gin

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 6, 2020

The Burwood Distillery is a small craft distillery founded by Jordan Ramey, Marco Cilic, and Ivan Cilic located in Calgary Alberta (4127 6th Street N.E). The Distillery includes a restaurant and Cocktail Lounge which offers a casual environment to enjoy the not only the distilleries fine spirits but also locally sourced farm-to-table menu items.

The distillery was hand-built and styled after a mixture of old-world Eastern European & Scottish farm-styled distilleries combined with new world craft beer methodologies. To help bring this unique facility to life, Marko spent tireless hours building the distillery, literally from the dirt floor up.

To produce their gin, the team performed over 80 gin deconstructions to help them select their botanical recipe. Although I am not necessarily privy to the entire recipe, the website hints that Juniper and Coriander were given starring roles within the spirit elevated by Citrus and Lemon Grass. Szechuan Pepper adds a touch of spice which is tempered by the addition of Dragon Well Green Tea.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Burwood Gin

“… In the breezes, juniper takes the lead with a touch of spiciness and some bright citrus following. That spiciness is likely a product of both the Coriander and the Szechuan Pepper botanicals. There is a mild scent of lemon in the air as well as a light earthiness which seems to meld the scents together …”
