The country of Venezuela produces some fantastic rum. I have already reviewed the Santa Theresa 1796 from Venezuela, as well I have featured the Venezuelan Diplomatico Rums in one of my first Howling Highlights. There is a third famous rum family from Venezuela, The Pampero Rum family.
A few weeks ago I gave you my first impressions of Pampero Seleccion 1938 when I found what I believe was one of the last bottles for sale in Edmonton. Now I cannot find the rum anywhere in the Province, and sadly it seems the entire family of Pampero rums will be absent from Alberta shelves this winter.
Fortunately for my readers I did find one bottle, and now I have completed five separate tasting for this rum and also experimented with a few cocktails. You can read the results of this hard labour here:

Several weeks ago I met James Robertson, The International Sales Rep for Tullibardine. It was at the Edmonton Food and Wine Festival, and I mentioned to him that I would soon be reviewing the 1988 Tullibardine. He was pleased and gave me a small sip at the show of this and a few other of Tullibardine’s fine whiskies. We have exchanged emails since then, and hopefully established the beginnings of a working relationship. The 1988 Tullibardine commemorates the 500th anniversary of King James IV’s coronation where legend has it he purchased ale from Scotland’s first brewery. What does this have to do with Tullibardine? Well the brewery from which King James IV purchased the ale happens to be on the very site where Tullibardine now stands.
Here is an excerpt from my review:
“…The smoke I noted in the glass has asserted itself in the mouth with a persistent oily cigar smoke presence which underlies the honey and vanilla notes on the palate. I use the term cigar because the smoke seems to have a certain organic texture. The sweetness of the malt is very pleasant, as is a mild buttery feel the malt has upon the tongue….”

We have come to the fourth review on a series of new Colombian rums entering the Canadian marketplace. The Juan Santos 12 year old rum brings an increased level of smoothness and depth to the rum glass, and it was truly a pleasure to review the sample which was provided for me by the rum’s Canadian importer, The Liber group.
Please read the review here:
The review includes a new cocktail I designed specifically for this rum called THE JUAN SANTOS SLOE AND SOUR. The cocktail has already received positive feedback on RUM CONNECTION where my Juan Santos Gran Reserva review was first published.

Gibson’s Finest Whiskies are some of the smoothest Canadian whiskies ever made. This, of course, makes them some of the smoothest in the world as Canada is renowned for its smooth whisky. The 12 year old is a step up from Gibson’s regular Sterling brand. I found it to be a mildly sweet well balanced whisky with a nice honey and rye flavour profile.
Here is an excerpt from my review:
“…We have a very nice soft oil on the palate with a sweet honey taste interlaced with toffee and rye. This has a very balanced profile which when given time in the mouth, displays touches of caramel, flashes of hot spices, and a wonderful underlying sweetness….”

On October 21, 2009 I first began to taste the Ron Matusalem Platino Rum I found the rum to be shy and subdued with a mild pleasant, but extremely laid back flavour. I have visited this bottle several times since then and have now completed my full review.
The Ron Matusalem company has a fascinating history dating back to 1872, when the brand was established by Benjamin and Eduardo Camp and Evaristo Alvarez. A marriage between Evaristo Álvarez daughter, and the son of Eduardo Camp, at the turn of the next century begat a family tradition of the original founders that has through five generations controlled the company. The family fled Cuba in the 1960s and reestablish the company on U.S. soil in the state of Florida. The reestablished company produces their Cuban style rum which is now blended in the Dominican Republic.
