Fall Cocktail Bazaar: Berry Lemonade Mule

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 7, 2018

Recently the folks at Smirnoff (well actually it was one of their media companies) reached out to me wondering if I was willing to feature some of their new flavoured products including the Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Malt Beverages on The Rum Howler Blog. I found the idea rather interesting. Although I am primarily a reviewer of spirits, I do share cocktail recipes from time to time as well. So I responded by saying that if they could send me product samples as well as recipe suggestions which I could make at home, then I would share the recipes which I liked in a sort of Cocktail Bazaar during the fall.

One of the first recipes they sent me was a Mule-style serving which mixes Smirnoff’s Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Lemonade with Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka, Lemonade and Ginger Beer. It is certainly a recipe which is easy to prepare at home. So I mixed one up and decided that this delicious combination should be the first recipe for my Fall Cocktail Bazaar.

It’s a dandy recipe, I suggest you try one as well.

Berry Lemonade Mule

2 oz. Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Berry Lemonade
1 oz. Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka
1 oz. Lemonade
1 oz. Ginger Beer
Ice
Raspberry and Lemon for Garnish

Add Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer Berry Lemonade, Smirnoff No. 21 vodka, and lemonade to a tall mixing glass
Add ice and stir until well chilled.
Pour over ice into a mule mug
Top with Ginger Beer
Garnish with a fresh raspberry and lemon

Enjoy Responsibly!

Review: Flor de Caña 7 Blanco Reserva

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 5, 2018

Flor de Caña has a history of rum production which is dated to 1890 at the San Antonio Sugar Mill, in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua. The company was founded by Francisco Alfredo Pellas and today, over 120 years later, the company is led headed by the fifth generation of the Pellas family. It has grown to be not only one of Central America’s leading brands of rum, it is also one of the most recognized rum brands in the world. According to the company website, all of the Flor de Caña rum is produced from molasses which is made from sugar cane harvested in fields adjacent to the distillery in Chichigalpa. This molasses is fermented and then distilled five times in a continuous column still. The resulting distillate is laid down to age in small American white oak barrels in traditional aging warehouses built without air conditioning in an undisturbed environment.

Flor de Caña 7 Blanco Reserva is a premium white rum with the number 7 on the label representative of the average age of the rums in the blend with some variation in the actual age based upon blending to a consistent flavour profile. Although the rums within the blend have been aged, they are filtered clear making the spirit suitable for mixed drinks and short cocktails.

Here is a link to my full review which includes two serving suggestions:

Review: Flor de Caña 7 Blanco Reserva

“… The aroma rising up from the glass contains nice notes of vanilla tinges with caramel and banana. There is a light hint menthol alongside, and some light citrus notes (orange peel and lemon) as well …”

Please enjoy my review, Chimo!

Review: Tomatin 18 Year Old (Single Malt)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 3, 2018

The Tomatin Distillery is located in the Monadhliath Mountains near Inverness, the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. The Distillery was established in 1897. (For those who do not know, the term “established in 1897″ is a code term which represents an acknowledgement by the distillery that the company began to legally pay taxes on the spirits it produced in that year. When the Distillery actually began to produces spirits is not acknowledged.) Because of its location in the Monadhliath Mountains, Tomatin is one of the highest distilleries (elevation wise) in Scotland at 315 metres above sea level. In 1985 as the Distillery was expanded and was at that time renamed, The Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd.. The company now operates 12 stills, in a process which perhaps more closely resembles a large-scale industrial factory rather than a typical Single Malt Distillery. This is because the distillery has always been a large-scale producer of whisky for Scotland’s major blends. However, Tomatin has recently began to focus their efforts on also producing their own Single Malt Whisky as well as establishing their own brand identity.

The Tomatin 18 Year Old (Single Malt) is matured for eighteen years in refill oak casks and then finished in Oloroso sherry casks.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Tomatin 18 Year Old (Single Malt)

“… Not quite a sherry bomb, but the influence of the Oloroso casks is on display. Oak spice plays within the fruity sherry notes with the barley malt playing coy in the background …”

Review: Banff Ice Vodka

Posted by Arctic Wolf on October 1, 2018

Banff Ice Vodka is a Vodka brand owned and produced by Alberta Distillers Limited (Owned by Beam Suntory) based in Calgary, Alberta. This is a triple distilled grain spirit  bottled at 40 % alcohol by volume. It is sold throughout Western Canada and even makes its way into Ontario via the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario).

Earlier this summer, I organized a small Vodka tasting for a few friends. We tasted Russian Standard Vodka, and Strait Vodka 40 alongside Banff Ice comparing each for sipping, for shooting, as a palette cleanser, and in cocktails. This review has been written based upon the tasting notes I constructed during the Vodka Tasting as well as from the comments of my friends, and from my impression during a subsequent tasting I did by myself with the spirit in isolation.

Here is a link to the results for Banff Ice Vodka.

Review: Banff Ice Vodka

“… The spirit was only slightly thickened, and when I raised the glass to my nose I could detect very little aroma. There was a light spiciness and a hint of menthol, but that was all. The first sip brought forward bits of grain spice and a touch of citrus zest, but again, that was all. When chilled, Banff Ice is an extremely clean, crisp spirit …”

Please enjoy my review of this surprising spirit!

Review: Hine Antique Cognac XO

Posted by Arctic Wolf on September 30, 2018

Hine is one of the oldest Cognac Houses in the commune of Jarnac, (within the Cognac appellation in France of course). Hine has produced their Cognac since 1763.

Hine Antique XO Cognac is produced from a blend 40 Cognac spirits in the heart of France’s Cognac appellation on the banks of the River Charente. Recently the brand upgraded the blend such that every drop of Hine Antique is now distilled from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne cru. The Grand Champagne cru is the most recognizable Cognac region of France known for consistently producing high quality grape harvests. In addition, all of the eau de vie for this cognac blend have been aged a minimum of ten years which is four years longer than required by French law.

Here is a link to my review:

Review: Hine Antique Cognac XO

“… The initial nose is perhaps a tad restrained as scents of  oak spice and vanilla mingle within a fruited caramel aroma. As the glass breathes, I begin to notice a growing herbaceous quality with camphor, menthol and cinnamon weaving themselves into the lightly sweet caramel. Fresh fruit, (apples, pears and apricots) as well as a bits of raisin unravel into the breezes above the glass as well …”

Please enjoy my review, Chimo!
