Super Bowl Recipe #1: DAB ON ‘EM WINGS

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 4, 2016

Yesterday I Introduced a Super Bowl inspired cocktail for your enjoyment, the Golden Gate. I mentioned in the posting that part of my plans for the Super Bowl was enjoying some chicken wings as well. In that vein of thought, I have decided to share a nice recipe called Dab On ‘Em Wings which features a Dabbing sauce made with Crown Royal De Luxe Canadian Whisky®.

This recipe embraces the relationship between Carolina Panther star Quarterback, Cam Newton and the ‘Dab’. The Dab is a new hip hop dance move which has become part of Cam’s end zone celebration. Some of his opponents have claimed that the move which bears a striking resemblance to a bicep flex is more of a taunt than a celebration. (I say, if you don’t want Cam to Dab, don’t let him score or throw touchdowns.)

If you are a Panther fan, you will want to see Cam do a whole lotta dabbing on Sunday; if you are a Broncos fan, the only dabbing you will want to see is with chicken wings and the delicious sauce.

If you like sticky chicken wings, try this recipe. It is easy to prepare mixing Crown Royal De Luxe Canadian Whisky® with honey, garlic, soy sauce, chili sauce. and a packet of stir fry mix. I recommend you make the sauce and prep the wings the night before, and then refrigerate them overnight. On game day, just set up your barbeque so that you can start grilling half an hour before kick-off.

Dab on 'Em Wings

And of course, since the game starts at 4:00 MST. It is perfectly alright to mix yourself a Canadian Whisky Splash with the Crown Royal De Luxe Whisky to enjoy while you are cooking.

DAB ON ‘EM WINGS

Crown Royal Deluxe Bottle Shot1/3 cup Crown Royal Canadian Whisky®
1/3 cup Honey
1/4 cup Soy sauce
2 tablespoons Thai Chili Sauce
1 packet (0.75-ounce) Kikkoman stir-fry seasoning mix
2 teaspoons crushed garlic
4 pounds chicken wing drumettes
3 scallions (green onions), finely chopped (optional)
1/4 cup chopped peanuts (optional)

In a large bowl, combine whisky, honey, soy sauce, chili sauce, stir-fry seasoning, and garlic
Add drumettes, tossing to coat
Cover with plastic wrap and marinate in refrigerator for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight.

Let drumettes stand at room temperature for 30 minutes
Set up the barbeque for cooking over medium-high heat
Lightly oil the heated barbeque grill
Place dummettes on the hot oiled grill
Cook for 12 to 18 minutes (until cooked through) turning occasionally
Transfer chicken to a platter
Sprinkle with chopped scallions and peanuts (optional).

Please enjoy that Canadian Whisky Splash responsibly!

Review: Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Posted by Arctic Wolf on February 2, 2016

Evan Williams SAM_1709Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a whiskey brand produced and bottled in Kentucky by Heaven Hill. This company refers to its entry-level whiskey as a ‘black label brand’, and as such it is meant to be the flag bearer of the Evan Williams line-up. The whiskey has no age statement, however the Evan Williams website tells us that it is aged longer than required by law. (Straight whiskeys must by law be aged for 2 years in new oak barrels; however, if they do not have an age statement they must be aged for 4 years. )

Here is a link to my review of the Evan Williams Black label Bourbon:

Review: Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon

“… The initial aroma is nice with scents of corn-syrup and maple mingling with oak and wood sap. There are also pungent spicy tobacco aromas, a gentle hay-like grassiness, a few indications of raisins, bits of orange peel, and a mild influences of canned apricots in the breezes. A light banana-like aroma is hinted at …”

Please Enjoy my review.

Review: Dulce Vida Organic Rocky Mountain (Añejo Tequila)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 31, 2016

Dulce Vida Rocky MountainDulce Vida Tequila is produced from 100% organic agave grown in the Los Altos highlands which are situated in the Tequila Region of Mexico. The company produces the only 100° proof, 100% organic tequila (also free from additives of any kind) in the world. As well as being 100% organic, their tequila is also produced in a manner which embraces the concept of sustainability.

Dulce Vida Organic Rocky Mountain Edition is produced from a special selection of barrels chosen by Dulce Vida’s Colorado State Manager which have rested in the light, crisp air of the Rocky Mountains’ high altitude and outdoor environment. The Añejo Tequila was aged in these single barrels in the Los Altos region of Jalisco at 1790 meters of altitude in the dry, crisp climate of San Ignacio Cerro Gordo near Arandas, also known as Tierra Colorada.

Here is a link to my review of this special Añejo Tequila:

Review: Dulce Vida Organic Rocky Mountain (Añejo Tequila)

“… The initial scents above the glass carry impressions of fine oak spices and sandalwood interspersed with wisps of butterscotch, honey and vanilla. As I inspected the breezes I soon noticed a very well-defined highland spiciness (white pepper and lime zest) coming forward which was accented very nicely with the light earthy aroma of agave fruit. Pineapple, pumpkin and baked squash all seem to be hinted at …”

Please enjoy my review which completes my examination of the Dulce Vida Range.

Review: Highland Park 12 Years Old (2015)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 23, 2016

Highland Park 12

The 12 Year Old Highland Park Whisky is the core expression of Highland Park Distillery, that is to say, it is their flagship brand. Highland Park prides itself in not making any compromises when making whisky. The twelve-year expression is bottled at 43 % alcohol by volume, and is the youngest in Highland Park’s impressive lineup.

I reviewed this particular expression of Highland Park Single Malt Whisky back in 2009, and for several years it was one of my all time favourites. Recently, I received a newer bottling. I decided to put the whisky once again through the paces of my review system to see how this bottling (2015) compared to the great 2009 bottling.

Here is a link to my latest Single Malt Whisky Review:

Review: Highland Park 12 Years Old (2015)

“… The whisky has had more time to breathe, and when I examine the breezes above the glass I sense more of the familiar aromatics of Orkney peat. There are light heather and lavender smells as well as smells of willow trees sitting atop a boggy peat. A very light butterscotch and honey sweetness is present as well, and this helps to make the Orkney peat more approachable …”

Please enjoy my review.

Review: Havana Club Añejo 7 Años

Posted by Arctic Wolf on January 14, 2016

Havana thumbSometimes when I take the first sip of new rum, I close my eyes; and I let the rum show me where it belongs. This rum brought me to an old tavern, close to the docks.  The kind of place you see in old movies where the rum flows and stories get taller in the telling.  The place has an oily, tobacco stained floor. Cigarette smoke drifts up to the ceiling mingling here and there with the occasional smell of a Cuban cigar.

A girl sits on a boardwalk stage, singing slightly out of key, as the patrons in the tavern pay more attention to their stories than to her. A burly bartender, who looks like he can handle whatever trouble comes his way, wipes the sweat from his brow, and then with the same towel wipes the bar-top. He glances at me playing solitaire in the corner of the room and sipping the rum he served me. I had told him I would stay and pay him well if the rum was good.

He served me a soft oily, smoky rum called Havana Club.  I smile… the tip will be generous tonight.

Review: Havana Club 7 Year Old Cuban Rum

“… The nose displays a moderate amount of smoke which seems to subdue the aroma from the glass to a certain extent. Over time, molasses, dark brown sugary baking spices, dried fruit (raisins and prunes) and a lurking tobacco all find their way out of the glass and into my nostrils. I would have scored this a little higher had the nose been more assertive …
