Review: English Harbour 10 Year Reserve Rum

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 23, 2018

Two weeks ago I began examining the entire family of English Harbour Rum as I published my recently revised review of the 5 Year Old Rum. This week I step up the ladder so to speak and have a look at the more prestigious  English Harbour 10 Year Old Reserve Rum (next week I go to the top of the ladder and look at the 25 Year Old).

According to the Antigua Distillery Limited website all English Harbour Rum is aged in used American bourbon barrels which are charred on the inside. Interestingly, as each barrel is filled a handful of oak chips is added to enhance the interaction of oak and rum. The English Harbour 10 Year Rum is a genuine Caribbean rum. The rum is named for the Antiguan naval port of English Harbour which was the site of naval confrontations between the English and the French who were the two major naval powers of the 18th Century.

Here is a link to my recently revised review:

Review: English Harbour 10 Year Reserve Rum

“… The rum enters the mouth with a combination of dark (almost burnt) brown sugar with oak and baking spices (vanilla and cinnamon primarily) following quickly behind. I can taste hints of coconut and a light winding of orange peel in the background. The rum is lightly creamy which helps coat the palate allowing the flavours to mingle and linger which is very pleasant …”

Please enjoy my review which concludes with a nice cocktail suggestion, the Rum Old Fashioned.

Review: Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel (2017)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 22, 2018

Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel is the first production Canadian Whisky ever to sold in the single barrel format. It drawn from a single oak cask and bottled a full 51.5 % alcohol by volume bottling proof. For this whisky, Crown Royal Master Blender, Andrew MacKay, hand selected the barrels to be used for this expression. Because each barrel will have different characteristics there will be differences in each individual barrel bottled. However, the casks chosen share common characteristic flavour profiles which gives the brand a general consistency of flavour and maturation.

Here is a link to my review of this special whisky:

Review: Crown Royal Hand Selected Barrel (2017)

“… The scents in the breezes include rich oak spices and lush caramel toffee, some lovely bourbon-like honeycomb with vanilla, pipe tobacco, rye spices and bitter rye kernel. As I let the glass breathe, impressions of maple and cola evolved with vanilla and baking spices. Marmalade, canned apricots and almond turning to marzipan rounds out the wonderful nose …”

Review: Wild Turkey (Kentucky Straight Bourbon)

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 21, 2018

Wild Turkey produces their bourbon from a mash bill which includes three grains: corn, barley, and rye. This mash bill is said to have a relatively high proportion of rye which gives the whiskey brand its signature spicy kick. The flagbearer for the brand, Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Bourbon  has recently replaced Wild Turkey 81 across North America (I am told that two spirits are actually one and the same and when I tasted the two spirits side by side I confirmed this). This bourbon spirit, rather than being bottled at the regular 40 % alcohol by volume is instead bottled at a slightly higher proof, 40.5% alcohol by volume or 81 proof.

Although the spirit carries no age statement, the Wild Turkey Website informs us that this Kentucky Straight Bourbon is blended from whiskeys aged from five to eight years (minimum 5 years) in what the company refers to as their ‘famous #4 alligator char‘ American Oak barrels. The website also lets us know that they believe the Wild Turkey Bourbon should be served over ice, or with a suitable mixer.

Here is a link to my full review:

Review: Wild Turkey (Kentucky Straight Bourbon)

“… The initial breezes above the glass bring forward a sweetened butterscotch note wrapped in oak and cedar spice. Scents of vanilla and honeycomb come forward mingling in the air with the fine wood spices creating an impression of light toffee. The spices grow in intensity and begin to throw off dry rye-like scents of ginger …”

Review: Corzo Silver Tequila

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 19, 2018

Corzo is a 100% Blue Weber Agave Tequila produced in Los Altos (the Highlands) of Jalisco, Mexico. Although the Corzo website does not explicitly state the distillery which produces their tequila,The NOM identifier on the the bottle is 1487 CRT. This NOM identifier is required by the Mexican Government to be placed on the label of each bottle of tequila to verify that it is produced legally from agave sourced in the Tequila region of Mexico. Each distillery has its own NOM, and by researching the NOM we can discover exactly which distillery produces each brand of tequila.

The Corzo Brand is produced at the Tequila Cazadores De Arandas, S. De R.I. De C.V. (also known as Bacardi y Compania, S.A. de C.V.). Indeed the Corzo Brand is owned by Bacardi and is their premium tequila brand.

March Madness made with Corzo Blanco

Most tequila is double distilled however, Corzo Silver Tequila is triple distilled with only a small center cut taken from each distillation. In fact this fine center cut requires the company to use twice as much agave to produce the tequila as would normally be used. The triple distillation and the fine center cut means that the Corzo spirit is lighter in texture and body than a typical 100 % agave blanco spirit. Before bottling the Blanco spirit is injected with small oxygen bubbles which are said to help rest the spirit and achieve a smoother more refined taste.

Here is a link to my newest Tequila Review:

Review: Corzo Silver Tequila

“… The triple distillation has not only lightened the spirit it has taken a portion of the assertive agave away as well. This means that the agave push is lessened, but it also means that other lighter aromas which might have been missed are now apparent. I notice evergreens (more the needles than the boughs), spearmint,  and light accents of citrus zest in the air as well …”

Please enjoy the review which includes my cocktail recommendation, March Madness.

Review: Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash

Posted by Arctic Wolf on March 18, 2018

This week I was sent a bottle of Captain Morgan’s newest flavoured rum, Captain Watermelon Smash. The product was described to me as a gluten-free flavoured rum which arrives in a nifty scratch and sniff coconut shaped (and apparently scented) round rum bottle similar to the bottle used for the previously released: Captain Morgan LoconutCaptain Morgan Jack-O’Blast Pumpkin Spiced and Captain Morgan Cannon Blast Rums.

According to the Captain Morgan Website:

The latest rum bottle from the Captain is bursting with juicy watermelon flavor. So flavorful, even our pack is scented! Simply enjoy as a chilled shot for instantly delicious fun or create a refreshing spritzer by mixing with club soda and a lemon garnish. Pick up some Watermelon Smash today to party like a Captain all summer long.

Watermelon Smash bottled at 25 % alcohol by volume and was apparently is designed primarily to be consumed as a shot; however, it is also can be mixed in fun cocktails such as the Watermelon Smash Spritz or the Watermelon Mojito (see recommended servings below).

Here is a link to my latest flavoured rum review:

Review: Captain Morgan Watermelon Smash

“… I decided to begin my examination by constructing some of the signature cocktails sent to me by the Captain Morgan team. I started with the Watermelon Smash Shot, and I served one to my friend who was sampling the spirit with me. His reaction was telling …”

Please enjoy my review of the newest Captain Morgan Flavour.
